The New York Yankees are happy with the haul that they got at the MLB trade deadline, but the team still has some holes across the roster.
It was always a pipe dream for New York to deal with everything, especially with the injuries around the team. But the Yankees did pretty well as they get set for the stretch run of the season.
New York has its eyes set on going after another World Series title, with the organization hoping that they can end the long drought. The last time the Yankees won the title was the 2009 season, giving the historic organization some tense seasons.
But while the team is focused on ther remainder of the season, the front office has also started to look ahead to the offseason. New York will have to address some of the needs from the roster, including at the catcher spot.
Yankees Could Trade For Hunter Goodman?
The Yankees tried to land a catcher at the trade deadline, but the team wasn’t able to get a deal done. But one name that has circled the Yankees this year is All-Star Hunter Goodman of the Colorado Rockies, who was mentioned in different trade rumors this year.
New York has been linked to Goodman, and they could explore a deal for the catcher in the offseason. In fact, MLB analyst Mike Axisa of CBS Sports named the Yankees as a landing spot for the All-Star if Colorado decides to move him.
“The Rockies are slowly but surely beginning to move in the right direction, though they remain a few years away from serious contention. I have no doubt teams will ask about Goodman this offseason. If it can’t get him to sign a long-term extension, Colorado might trade him over the winter, when his value will be at its highest point,” Axisa wrote.
Goodman has put together another strong season for the Rockies, earning his second straight All-Star appearance. For the year, the slugger has hit .254 with 33 home runs and 56 RBIs, while posting an OPS of .870.
The Yankees covet a catcher like Goodman, who can hit for power, giving them an extra boost in the lineup. Goodman still has three more years left on his current contract, giving a team like the Yankees some flexibility if they were to trade for him.
Yankees’ Catching Situation
Of course, this means that the Rockies will ask for a ton to move Goodman in the offseason. But New York’s catching situation hasn’t been good this season, and the front office has to address this over the offseason.
Austin Wells’ bat has struggled all year, with the veteran hitting just .169 on the season. New York recently brought in Mitch Garver to give themselves more depth for the final months of the year, but something has to change.
There could be a bidding war to land Goodman this offseason after his second straight breakout year. But the Yankees could feel a sense of urgency to get the deal done, giving the front office more of an aggressive approach.
This all remains to be seen, but if Goodman is indeed dealt, the Yankees will surely be involved in the sweepstakes.
