Nearly three months after Brandon Clarke’s sudden death stunned the Memphis Grizzlies and the city he represented for seven NBA seasons, authorities have provided a definitive answer about what happened.
Clarke died from the effects of heroin and cocaine, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner announced Friday. His death was ruled an accident.
The 29-year-old Grizzlies forward was found unresponsive in a bedroom at a Los Angeles-area residence May 11. Paramedics pronounced him dead shortly after arriving at approximately 5 p.m.
The medical examiner conducted an examination the following day, but Clarke’s cause and manner of death were initially deferred while toxicology testing and other investigative work continued. The findings were certified Aug. 7.
Medical Examiner Ends Months of Uncertainty
The announcement confirms that Clarke’s death was an accidental drug overdose. Initial reports had indicated that drug paraphernalia was discovered inside the residence, but authorities had not publicly established a cause before Friday.
In the weeks after Clarke’s death, his family, teammates and supporters were left grieving while questions about his final hours remained unanswered.
Clarke had appeared upbeat only days earlier while visiting a Los Angeles barber. Video from the appointment showed him smiling and interacting comfortably, offering no visible indication of the tragedy to come.
Approximately six weeks before his death, Clarke was arrested in Arkansas following a high-speed police pursuit. Authorities said more than 230 grams of kratom were recovered from his vehicle.
The arrest was separate from the medical examiner’s findings. Friday’s announcement identified heroin and cocaine as the substances responsible for Clarke’s death and did not list kratom as a cause.
Clarke’s Loss Still Reverberates Through Memphis

An official finding can settle a medical question. It cannot account for the emptiness Clarke’s death created inside the Grizzlies’ locker room or among the fans who watched his career unfold.
Clarke spent his entire NBA career in Memphis after the Grizzlies acquired his draft rights in 2019. He earned NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 2020 and became one of the franchise’s most dependable reserves through his energy, efficiency and ability to play above the rim.
He averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 60.5% across 309 regular-season games. Injuries, including a torn Achilles tendon in 2023, limited him during his final seasons.
The numbers explain Clarke’s basketball value. His teammates’ reactions revealed something deeper.
Former Grizzlies star Ja Morant wrote that Clarke was “gone way too soon” and described their relationship as bigger than basketball. Jaren Jackson Jr. said he would love his longtime teammate forever.
Clarke’s sister, Taylor Triplett, later thanked supporters for embracing her family while acknowledging that she was struggling to find the words to address the loss.
The medical examiner has now answered the central question surrounding Clarke’s death. For those who knew him as a teammate, brother, son or friend, the harder work of living with that answer continues.
