Cubs’ Nico Hoerner Earns $141 Million Contract Extension

News broke late Thursday night that the Chicago Cubs and infielder Nico Hoerner agreed on a new six-year contract extension.

On Friday, ESPN’s Jeff Passan announced that the contract extension is six years, worth $141 million: “It’s the fourth-largest contract ever for a second baseman and locks up the 28-year-old into the 2030s. Defense, running, contact skill — Hoerner does everything well.”

ESPN’s Jesse Rogers was first with the news of the years on the extension, and now the finances have been released.

As Jeff Passan outlines, this is a massive contract extension for an infielder like Nico Hoerner, who has yet to post more than 10 home runs in a season in his seven-year MLB career.

Hoerner has two Gold Gloves (2023, 2025) on his resume and has amassed 21.8 wins above replacement in his career. In 2025, Hoerner posted a 6.3 bWAR over 156 games. He hit .297 in ’25 with 29 doubles and an OPS+ of 114.

The contract will start next season, as Hoerner finishes the three-year contract worth $35 million he signed back in 2023.

MLBTradeRumors.com’s Darragh McDonald provided some insight on what makes Nico Hoerner a valuable asset to any team:

“He combines that offense with strong attributes in other facets of his game. He has stolen 123 bases in that four-year span, with at least 20 in each season. Defensively, he is considered to be good enough to handle shortstop but has been bumped to the other side of the bag by the presence of Dansby Swanson.”

Extending Nico Hoerner to a six-year contract seems like the right move for the Cubs. Just a few days ago, Chicago decided to lock up Pete Crow-Armstrong as well to a hefty extension.

Hoerner is still on the right side of 30 (28), and has a career .722 OPS in 2620 at bats.

According to BaseballReference.com, Hoerner is projected to have another quality season with eight home runs, 27 doubles, and a .282 average.

Hoerner already has a game under his belt in 2026, going 0-for-4 on Opening Day.

Dating back to the start of 2023, Hoerner has 32 defensive runs saved and 35 outs above average at the second base position.
