The Memphis Grizzlies are no longer dealing with uncertainty, they’re approaching a decision. Ja Morant’s future in Memphis is quickly shifting from complicated to inevitable.
Multiple league sources told ESPN that Morant has privately expressed he no longer wants to play for the Grizzlies. That stance, combined with a fractured relationship inside the organization, has pushed both sides toward what now feels like an unavoidable outcome: a trade.
A Fracture That Never Healed
The breaking point traces back to early in the season. After a Halloween loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, Morant clashed with head coach Tuomas Iisalo in the locker room. Iisalo called out Morant’s effort following a 3-for-14 performance. Morant responded dismissively, according to reports. The organization backed the coach. That decision sent a clear message and one Morant hasn’t fully accepted.
Memphis then instructed teammates to give Morant space during his one-game suspension. Instead of creating distance for reflection, it deepened a sense of isolation. From that point forward, the relationship shifted.
Morant skipped exit interviews and played just 20 games this season before a UCL injury ended his year. The numbers tell part of the story as well as he finished the season averaging 19.5 points on a career-worst 41 percent shooting, but the disconnect behind the scenes matters more.
League-Wide Value Has Taken a Hit
This isn’t just a Memphis issue anymore. Around the league, Morant’s value has changed. One person who didn’t sugarcoat the reality of the future Morant is facing is ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins. Perkins believes that not only has Morant’s perception change amongst the Grizzlies organization, but across the entire league.
“It ain’t just Memphis that’s trending off Ja Morant,” Perkins said on the Perk Unplugged podcast. “It’s the league. So you realize that they were trying to trade him at the trade deadline. And when nobody wanted him, they were asking Memphis to attach a first-round pick just for them to take Ja. That’s how he’s viewed in today’s game.”
“Aye, man, the NBA don’t need you, bro,” Perk added. You’re a hell of a talent. I’m speaking to you f–k as a media personality. Nah, bro, I’m actually coming at you as a real one. Hey, bro, the NBA don’t need you.”
Perkins pointed to trade deadline discussions where teams reportedly asked the Grizzlies to attach a first-round pick just to move Morant. That’s a stark contrast from where things stood just a few years ago, when Morant declared he was “fine in the West” and Memphis looked like a rising contender.
Since then, injuries and off-court incidents, including multiple suspensions in 2023, have reshaped how teams evaluate him. He has played only 79 games over the last three seasons. Availability and reliability now sit at the center of his value.
Morant’s Trade Market Reality
Memphis already explored the market. According to Shams Charania, the Grizzlies engaged in trade talks ahead of the deadline but found little traction.
The expectation now is that talks will restart this offseason, but the return won’t match Morant’s former status. League executives believe a realistic framework could resemble what the Atlanta Hawks received in the trade that sent star point guard Trae Young to the Washington Wizards.
The Wizards only had to move veteran guard CJ McCollum and sharpshooter Corey Kispert. One is an expiring contract set to come off the books this summer. The other, on a cheap contract simply used to make the salaries match for the trade. But the key thing missing was draft capital. That’s a tough pill for a franchise that once built its identity around Morant.
Still, Memphis has quietly prepared for this moment. Deals involving Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane have already stocked the team with future assets, signaling a broader shift in direction.
Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman has emphasized “open, honest and respectful communication” throughout this process. That may be true, but it doesn’t change the trajectory. Morant wants out. The organization has explored moving him. The league views him differently now. At some point, acknowledgment turns into action. And with that, we could soon be seeing Ja Morant in a new jersey.
