This offseason, Jon-Eric Sullivan took over as the Miami Dolphins general manager. Upon doing so, he was tasked with evaluating the roster that previous general manager Chris Grier had built, and once that evaluation was complete, he decided whether to keep or trade those pieces. As a result, the Dolphins underwent a drastic roster reconstruction.
Despite some players like Jaylen Waddle, Tua Tagovailoa, and Minkah Fitzpatrick being under contract, the team parted ways with them via trade or release. While other moves, like releasing Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb, were no-brainers due to the salary cap, those earlier moves were driven more by a desire for change and draft capital.
However, upon Sullivan’s evaluation of the team, he mentioned three players whom he viewed as pillars for the organization. Those players are Jordyn Brooks, Aaron Brewer and De’Von Achane. Coincidentally, all three players have one year remaining on their contracts, which makes them obvious extension candidates. And despite all three being involved in trade rumors, the team has come out and stated that their priority is to keep them in Miami. Now, Miami received some good news on a possible Achane extension.
De’Von Achane Shows Up at Miami Dolphins Workouts
As the Miami Dolphins began their offseason program with voluntary workouts, the team had a lone absentee. That was De’Von Achane, as he opted not to participate due to his ongoing pursuit of a contract extension. While Achane’s move ignited trade rumors, Jon-Eric Sullivan quickly shot that down as he told reporters Achane was not available for trade.
Now, a new update has surfaced in the De’Von Achane saga. ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted on X, “Miami running back De’Von Achane, who was not present for the start of the team’s voluntary off-season workout program last week, was spotted in the Dolphins’ training facility today, per sources. It is believed that Achane showed up as a sign of good faith as the two sides continue discussing a contract extension, per source.”
Miami Herald writer Isaiah Smalls categorized that as good news as he posted on X, “Finally good news on the Achane front.”
De’Von Achane’s Future
Regarding a possible extension and how contract negotiations have been going, Jon-Eric Sullivan told reporters, “We’ve had some positive conversations (about a new contract) over the past couple days. Trending in the right direction,” Sullivan added, “Obviously, he’s very important to what we’re doing. It’s all part of it; it’s part of professional sports. We’ll get to where we need to be one way or another, but yeah, things are trending in the right direction.”
Despite Miami’s disappointing season, Achane had a breakout season in 2025 as he set a new career-high with 1,838 scrimmage yards. His 1,350 rushing yards were the third-most in franchise history, behind only two seasons where running back Ricky Williams totaled nearly 400 carries. Achane led the league with 5.7 yards per carry, despite defenses game-planning to stop Miami’s rushing attack later in the season. Pairing him with dual-threat quarterback Malik Willis could result in Achane’s value going even higher during the 2026 season.
