Brett Veach Is Reshaping Chiefs’ Offense With Specific Purpose

The Kansas City Chiefs took a lot of lessons from their disappointing 2025 season.

That has lead to several personnel change, both within the roster and coaching staff. Eric Bieniemy is back as Kansas City’s offensive coordinator after a three-year hiatus, and DeMarco Murray is the new running backs coach.

The Chiefs’ prize signing in free agency was Kenneth Walker III. He was brought in not only to give their running game a boost, but take some pressure off of quarterback Patrick Mahomes. While speaking to the media on Thursday, general manager Brett Veach revealed he also acquired Walker to help transition to a big philosophy change on offense.

Veach had this to say about how Walker will fit into the Chiefs’ offense, and specifically with the interior of the offensive line.

“We do have some talent on the offensive line,” Veach said. “Everyone knows the potential and flashes that Josh (left tackle Josh Simmons) has shown. On the interior with Kingsley (left guard Kingsley Suamataia), Trey (right guard Trey Smith), and Creed (center Creed Humphrey), I think it would be a smart play to take advantage of that interior trio, to be more violent and utilize those guys and their strengths. When you add a guy like Ken Walker, that’s why he was so attractive to us. He has explosive speed, and he can do damage in the pass game.

“I don’t think he got enough credit for that because they (Seattle Seahawks) had Charbonnet (running back Zach Charbonnet),” Veach continued. “I think when he (Walker) squares his shoulders he runs with power and violence, but also has elusive qualities. When you combine a back like that and you have as talented of an inside three as we do, it would make sense to want to go out there and impose your will on opposing team’s defensive lines. It will be beneficial for Pat, too. We don’t want him dropping back 50-60 times a game to start the season. With EB (Eric Bieniemy) coming back here, with his running back roots, there’s going to be a high priority with the run game.”

How Does Change in Offensive Philosophy Impact Chiefs’ Draft Plans?

All signs are pointing toward the Chiefs committing to the run more than they ever have since Andy Reid became head coach. They will want to ease Mahomes back in as much as possible as he rehabs from a torn ACL, and are paying Walker a significant chunk of money.

Veach should continue to build Kansas City’s offense to embrace it’s new identity. That could mean selecting a right tackle early during the 2026 NFL Draft to cap off an already talented offensive line. Not only would that provide extra protection from Mahomes, but could give the Chiefs one of the best rushing attacks in the league.

We could also see Veach draft a different mold of wide receiver than the Chiefs traditionally take. They already have speedsters such as Xavier Worthy and Tyquan Thornton, so perhaps Veach will bring in a receiver who plays with physicality. Blocking is an underrated part of being a WR, and having one who can do it well makes a big difference on running plays.
