Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is already a decade old in the National Football League. The 31-year-old is set to enter his eleventh season in the big league and sixth in Detroit. Despite his remarkable resume on the gridiron and success over the years, he surprisingly continues to fly under the radar.
Take last season, for example, when he finished just behind the reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford in terms of total passing yards (4,564) among signal-callers, yet he continues to receive surprisingly little attention. On that note, Sports Illustrated‘s Albert Breer recently noted how the Lions’ QB1 doesn’t get enough credit and expects him to have another strong year.
“Jared Goff is one of the most underappreciated players in the entire league, getting two franchises that weren’t very good before he got there to the conference championship games,” Breer said recently. “The new offensive staff (at Lions) feels that way. What they found is a QB who has elite vision, elite feel, and is an elite leader. So their job is now to do the most with him with all the skill talent around him. And they feel like going back to some of the things that Jared Goff was good at. I would expect Goff to have a really big year.“
With a big offensive boost this offseason, Goff is expected to have another good year, but there are reasons he is still underappreciated.

Jared Goff, a California Golden Bears alumnus, was the first overall pick from the 2016 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Rams. With the signal-caller at the helm, they reached the postseason three times. In 2017, he took the franchise to the playoffs for the first time following a thirteen-year drought, while he produced elite numbers, crossing 4,600+ passing yards twice. Despite those numbers, he was traded to Detroit, where he has been at his best for the past five years.

Goff remains an underrated name in the NFL because he is a classic pocket passer, playing in the old-school way. The modern-day image of an elite quarterback is to be hyper athletic and a dual threat—similar to Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson.
Even when the five-time Pro Bowler puts up top-five passing numbers, including last season, he doesn’t get the same level of attention from the award voters or national media. So, if he wins a Super Bowl or takes his team to the big game like Stafford or Mahomes, he may finally change the way he is viewed.
As expectations are high yet again for the Lions QB this year, the new offensive coordinator, Drew Petzing, could get the most out of his talent.
The New OC Has Quickly Earned Jared Goff’s Trust
Drew Petzing previously served as the OC for the Arizona Cardinals for three seasons. The signal-caller already has great chemistry with the new OC, praising him for building a system around the strength of the key offensive stars instead of just adjusting to a rigid offensive scheme.
“He’s (Drew Petzing) been awesome. His teachings have been awesome,“ said Goff in a recent interview with the NFL Network. “The way he holds guys accountable has been awesome. His leadership ability, all of that. It’s been great.“
Likewise, the feeling is certainly mutual for the coach and the QB1. The OC insisted that the 31-year-old is making every effort to master his offensive playbook. In addition, he also praised the leadership Goff brings on the field. With so much potential on the roster, Goff and the Lions offense could have a big year.
