The New England Patriots are currently involved in a contract standoff with star cornerback Christian Gonzalez. While it is expected that the two sides will get something done in the future, nothing has been completed yet.
As the contract negotiations continue on, star quarterback Drake Maye has weighed in with his thoughts on the matter.
Boston.com has shared Maye’s opinion on the Gonzalez contract situation.
“I’m not thinking about that right now,” Maye said. “I’m a big fan of Gonzo and kind of how things are playing out, so I respect him for being out here and competing and wanting to practice. I think that speaks a lot for him wanting to be here. I said it before, he’s one of the best corners in the league, so I’m looking forward to playing with him, and I’m glad he’s on our team.”
He also was asked about his own future contract. Maye isn’t thinking about that either.
“I don’t think it’s hard not to think about it,” Maye said. “I try to be in the present. The present — that’s why they call it a present, man. It’s a gift. So I just try to be here, be where my feet are, and try to get better and better.”
Patriots Must Get a New Deal Done With Christian Gonzalez
It would be a total shock if New England wasn’t able to get a new deal done with Gonzalez. The Patriots know just how valuable he is for long-term success.
Last season with New England, the 24-year-old cornerback played in 14 games. He racked up 69 total tackles to go along with 10 defended passes.
Throughout the first three seasons of his career, Gonzalez has played in 34 games. He has totaled 145 tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery, three interceptions, and 24 defended passes.
Gonzalez isn’t going to come cheap. He is expected to reset the cornerback market when his extension arrives. The current projected value for that contract is expected to be somewhere in range of $30-35 million.
Drake Maye Poised to Take Leap Into Superstardom
In just his second season with the Patriots last year, Maye became one of the top MVP candidates in the NFL. He also led New England to the Super Bowl.
Maye completed 72 percent of his passes for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He also chipped in with 450 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
Another year of improvement should result in Maye reaching full-blown superstar status.
This offseason, the Patriots invested heavily into Maye’s future. They were able to give him two new top targets, signing Romeo Doubs in free agency and trading for A.J. Brown.
Entering the 2026 season, Maye has a better supporting cast than he had a year ago. That should result in even more growth in his third NFL season.
