The Philadelphia Eagles returned to the practice field in full pads on Saturday, August 8, and are still rolling without one of their top playmakers.
The veteran wide receiver DeVonta Smith started missing practice earlier in the week. According to the team’s official training camp injury report, Smith is dealing with a hamstring injury.

Monday, August 3, was the first time Smith missed practice this offseason.
The veteran wideout was still around the team, but he wasn’t suited up or participating in any capacity.
That remained the case on Saturday, as the Eagles fired up a team vs. team scrimmage, preparing for their first set of preseason action, which happens next week.

The severity of Smith’s setback is unclear. The fact that it hasn’t really been addressed could be a positive sign, but since it’s training camp, the Eagles haven’t felt obligated to put a timeline on his expected return.
Even if Smith were fully healthy, his status for the team’s first preseason game would likely be up in the air anyway. At this stage of his career, Smith is a seasoned veteran. The Eagles already know what he brings to the table, and they don’t want to risk an offseason injury in a meaningless game.

Before going out with an injury, Smith has been putting together a strong training camp.
Heading into the 2026 NFL season, Smith is preparing to be Jalen Hurts’ No. 1 target. Over the past four seasons, Smith was second to AJ Brown. Last year, Smith caught 77 passes for 1,008 yards in 17 games. He reached the end zone four times.

After Brown was traded to the New England Patriots, Smith knew he would be moving into the No. 1 spot.
Next week, the Eagles are set to pay a visit to the Baltimore Ravens for an August 15 preseason battle. They will take on the New England Patriots the following week (August 22), before closing out the preseason against the Cincinnati Bengals on August 28.
