Day number eight of Training Camp for the Chicago Bears was a mix of good and bad for the organization. While injuries perhaps captured the headlines of the day, they shouldn’t overshadow the positives that took place as well. After the Bears began Training Camp with a stretch of rough practices from the offense, day seven began to change that tune.
Bears Report’s Zack Pearson reported yesterday that the offense had a much-needed bounce-back performance.
The offense seems to have parlayed that success into the next day as well.
In the final two-minute drill of the day during an 11-on-11 session, Caleb Williams and the offense went a perfect 6-for-6 and capped off the final drive with a four-yard touchdown pass to Luther Burden for the win.
Caleb Williams’ Clutch Gene Wasn’t A Fluke
Sometimes, coming off of a surprise breakout season, it’s not unheard of for a team to “come back down to earth”. What made the Bears such a thrilling and special team last year was their comeback nature.
The ‘Cardiac Bears’ had a league-high seven fourth-quarter comebacks in 2025. While impressive, it is arguably not a sustainable way to win because it is so hard to replicate. However, Williams and the offense appear not to have lost a step with this clutch performance to end a shaky day of camp.
Ultimately, while the Bears will need to focus on winning games more dominantly, having the ability to rally in the clutch is certainly one of the best traits a team can have.
As camp rolls on, the hope is that the offense will continue to gel and become steadier as they prepare for their Week 1 bout against the Carolina Panthers.
Bears’ Injury Wave Has Significant Reprocussions
GettyChicago Bears defensive end Montez Sweat led the team in sacks with 10 in 2025.
Unfortunately, as previously mentioned, you can’t side-swipe the significance of the injuries. Bears free-agent safety Coby Bryant’s status is up in the air after Ben Johnson refuted the initial report that he would be out eight to ten weeks.
Then Montez Sweat, Braxton Jones, Gervarrius Owens, Dallis Flowers, and Jaylon Jones all exited Thursday with various injuries.
While it doesn’t yet appear that any of the injuries are significant, Montez Sweat’s grabs the most attention. Sweat apparently pulled himself off the field during an 11-on-11 rep and did not return to practice.
The severity of Sweat’s apparent injury has yet to be determined, but regardless, it certainly sent a shock through camp. Sweat is the premier player for Chicago at the edge position. The Bears defensive front has had a lot of questions throughout the offseason. If Sweat is forced to miss any time, the Bears will be forced to rely on a relatively raw unit.
Perhaps this scare forces the front office into addressing the position and adding a more solidified threat on the edge.
On the bright side, the younger players at the position will have an opportunity to garner more reps. This also puts the spotlight on third-year edge rusher Austin Booker, whom the team is banking on a breakout for regardless of Sweat’s health designation.
Booker has had a solid camp so far and appears to be on the pace the team had hoped for him.
The Bears kick off preseason in a little over a week, as fans will see their team take the field on August 15th against the Cleveland Browns. With how Bears camp has started, some key players may be taking the field in hopes of boosting the depth of the roster.
