NFL free agency is still in full swing, and analysts are beginning to break down their favorite moves by each team. Matt Verderame selected a New England Patriots move as one of his favorites this offseason.
New England Patriots Were Productive In Free Agency
The Patriots were productive in free agency, addressing needs on both sides of the football. This included the wide receiver position, where they were able to pick up a former Green Bay Packers playmaker. Verderame chose Romeo Doubs as his most impactful move in free agency, and he stated his case in Monday’s edition of the Monday Morning Quarterback column.
Doubs can certainly be an impactful playmaker for the Patriots. After all, he showed that ability during this time with the Packers. With that being said, there is something to the fact that he has never been a top option at the position.
Despite not being a top option, he does have the ability to make big plays. He set career highs in multiple categories. This included the second-most touchdowns from an isolated alignment among wide receivers with four. He had 1.8 yards per route, which ranked first in his career, as well as 21 explosive plays.
Verdamente believes that Doubs will fit strongly in New England.
Romeo Doubs is going to shine with the Patriots. Doubs spent his first four years in Green Bay, where he was a consistent second option but was constantly fighting for targets alongside Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks and others. Now he’ll be the clear-cut top option on the perimeter as New England moved off veteran Stefon Diggs. While $70 million over four years is a significant investment, Doubs goes to the perfect spot with Drake Maye, Josh McDaniels and the reigning AFC champs.
The buzz around the wide receiver has been going strong throughout the course of the offseason. Just recently, former Patriots corner Logan Ryan indicated that he believed Doubs has the potential to be a number one wide receiver. The receiver already indicated that he is excited to work with quarterback Drake Maye, as s he gets settled into the Patriots organization.
If anything, he could have an intriguing role for the Patriots. The organization still does not have a top wide receiver at this time. Doubs could be the guy to take the next step and become that playmaking target the offense is looking for. The Patriots may not be done at the position. However, they knew that they needed to address it. Doubs is certainly a strong candidate to help get production from the position.
New England Patriots Have Youth At Wideout
The Patriots do have younger wide receivers on the roster. 2025 saw the development of rookie wideout Kyle Williams. He recorded 10 catches for 209 yards and three touchdowns. The playmaker showed the ability to be a big-play threat, and he used his speed and skills to average 20.9 yards per catch on the season.
The team also has other younger wide receivers on the roster. Efton Chism could be a candidate to break out this season. He caught three passes for 75 yards and a touchdown at the end of the season. He showed an ability to run after the catch, and his speed was noticeable when he had the ball in his hands.
Whatever the case may be, Doubs will have the chance to be an impact playmaker for the Patriots. Whether as a complementary receiver for a bigger move, or a veteran in the room, this signing indeed may be one of the most impactful of the offseason to this point.
