Lakers Trade Pitch Lands Luka Doncic a 42% 3-Point Sniper in New 2-Team Deal

The Los Angeles Lakers aren’t done exploring ways to improve the roster around Luka Doncic this offseason. 

The Lakers are officially the new-look Lakers after signing a flock of potentially high impact role players and acquiring 25-year-old rising star center Walker Kessler in a massive sign-and-trade. 

With the team still somewhat light on the wing, it has made a strong push for Jonthan Kuminga, the 23-year-old star free agent, for over a month. Kuminga, who split last season between Golden State and Atlanta, hasn’t yet found a deal he likes.

Outside of adding a potential starting power forward, another area the Lakers could further look to address is shooting. There are some sharpshooters out there the Lakers could go after.

Having Doncic, ever the playmaker, running the show, the Lakers can’t have too many shooters. Recent signings like Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton and Matisse Thybulle are no slouches from the perimeter. They’ll surely make teams pay if left open. But Milwaukee Bucks star AJ Green just so happens to be one of the best shooters in the league. 

In a hypothetical scenario, the Lakers call the Milwaukee Bucks, who are fresh into the post-Giannis Antetokounmpo era, to send Green, a former undrafted player, to Los Angeles. Here is a proposed framework.

Bucks receive: Dalton Knecht and Jake LaRavia

It is important to reiterate that this trade is hypothetical and intended for some fun debate. So, why might both teams agree to this deal?

For the Bucks, moving Green for two younger players with much higher upside is a trade worth making. LaRavia and Knecht, 24 and 25, respectively, would slot in as two young players who could find their footing playing on a rebuilding team with minimal expectations. Moving both wings for Green may be giving up a touch more than the Lakers would want, but to make the salaries work and the trade legal, such a framework would be required to land Green from the Bucks.

Meanwhile, the Lakers get a strong pick up and add a considerable piece to their bench depth. Green, 26, is one of the league’s best 3-point shooters; he cashed 42 percent of his 3s last season and, of current players in the league who have hit at least 300 3s in their career, Greens ranks No. 4.

For the Bucks last season, Green registered a career-high 10.4 points per game and shot 40 percent from the 3-point line for the fourth year in a row dating back to his rookie season. 

Green is the perfect type of player the Lakers could use off the bench. Outside of Luke Kennard, whom the Lakers added around the midseason trade deadline, the team didn’t have a go-to 3-point shooter off the pine. 

If the Bucks are willing to deal Green this offseason — there has been some speculation that Milwaukee is open to moving him — the Lakers should be among the first teams to call.
