Dolphins Add Former Packers Player in GM’s First Signing

Following a 7-10 season, the Miami Dolphins fired their head coach and began the process of hiring a new general manager. After narrowing down their candidates and hiring Hall of Famer Troy Aikman to consult for the organization, the Dolphins decided to hire former Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan as their new general manager.

Sullivan will inherit a team without a head coach, and with questions at the quarterback position. The Dolphins signed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to an extension following the 2023 season, in which he led the NFL in passing yards, but poor performance in 2025 led to him being benched.

Regarding the quarterback position, Sullivan had previously said, “You always have to be assessing your quarterback situation, making sure that you have a quarterback that you can win with.” He will now hope to find a quarterback the Dolphins can win with. One of the reasons Miami was interested in Sullivan, was the fact he was able to scout and advocate the Packers drafting Jordan Love.

Dolphins Sign Former Packers Safety

With Sullivan having been officially announced by the team, he has begun to make his first moves as the Dolphins general manager. His first signing was safety Omar Brown, who signed a reserve/future deal with the Dolphins. Sullivan is familiar with the safety as Brown spent the 2024 season on the Packers’ practice squad. He missed the 2025 season with an injury he suffered during training camp and was then released by the Packers.

A reserve/future contract is a non-guaranteed, one-year deal. It gives the team the player’s rights for the next season without impacting the current salary cap or roster. Sullivan gets an opportunity to take a chance on a player he has a familiarity with.

Brown will be joining a depleted room of Dolphins defensive backs. Ashtyn Davis, Ifeatu Melifonwu, Jack Jones and Rasul Douglas all played significant snaps for Miami’s secondary, but they’re all set to be free agents as they signed one-year deals prior to the season.

Miami Dolphins Offseason Outlook

Despite making his first official transaction as the Dolphins general manager, Jon-Eric Sullivan’s offseason is only getting started. The Dolphins are currently conducting their search to find the 15th head coach in franchise history. So far, 11 candidates have surfaced and Miami has yet to narrow down their list. Their reported top target, John Harbaugh has agreed to a deal with the New York Giants, meaning Miami will have to look elsewhere.

As mentioned before, the Dolphins will have to find a suitable quarterback to take on the starting job in 2026. It was previously reported that the Dolphins were planning on acquiring a quarterback prior to the 2026 season. Whether that is still the plan after Miami fired head coach Mike McDaniel remains to be seen.

The team holds the No. 11 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, but the Dolphins have plenty of holes on their roster. Sullivan will have his hands full as he tries to turn Miami’s fortunes around in the near future. Several key decisions will have to be made, but after signing safety Omar Brown, he’s officially made his first move as Miami’s general manager.
