It makes sense, if you’ve paid any attention to the Dallas Cowboys over the past 30 years or so so, that team owner Jerry Jones could not in good conscience go through and entire training camp without throwing a grenade into the works. He has never liked quiet, has never liked his team to be out of the spotlight and has never liked a lack of drama–especially not while spending more than a month in Oxnard.
So it came as no surprise that Jones, while opening training camp at last week’s press conference, saw fit to bring some noise and some headlines by pretty plainly hinting that the Cowboys are on the brink of making a trade–a significant trade, at that. He hinted that it would be a defensive player, said he had already been talking to other teams about possibilities and was emphatic in saying he would give up future draft picks for a shot at winning now.
Cowboys Jerry Jones: ‘I Will Lay it Out There’
Cowboys fans well know that Jones very often lobs grandiose statements, and does not follow through–three years ago, it was, “all-in” and this year, it was supposed to be, “bust the budget.” But Jones said he may have been too hesitant on trades in recent years, and is out to change that.
“I will domino. I will lay it out there,” he said. “It’s not a threat. It’s just that I will shoot. So, yeah, we’re very capable, if we get the opportunity to improve it by doing it. My message simply is that I feel good enough about this thing to give up some of the future, if the opportunity comes up.”
Trade Target Might Not Be Jerry Jones’ ‘Substantive’ Addition
In the week since Jones made that declaration, there has been ample speculation about who, exactly, the Cowboys had in mind. Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is reporting that Dallas does have someone they’re targeting to add now, but that it is not a “big fish” type of player.
Said Harris, speaking on the “Star Time” podcast this week: “I think a trade is going to be made for somebody. Now, is it going to be substantive, as Jerry Jones put it? I don’t know. But there has been one source I have had who has been pretty right before, who was like, there is a specific player the Cowboys are going after, they’re gonna make a trade for. He’s like, just call me back whenever I am right.
“It’s not a huge player, to be honest, but you asked for a trade, I think there will be a trade before Week 1. It will be someone you see on the field quite a bit.”
Cowboys Not Likely Getting Jordyn Brooks
There was discussion about Maxx Crosby of the Raiders, whom the Cowboys tried to bring in before he was dealt to Baltimore, who failed his physical and sent him back to Las Vegas. There was talk, too, of Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks. Or, maybe a free agent–Von Miller or Bobby Wagner.
Brooks made the most sense, but Harris said the feeling is that he will stick with the Dolphins.
Harris said: “I believe so. Miami is looking forward with him and Devon Achane as kind of the cornerstones of what they’re trying to build over there. They’re building like a sandcastle during a tsunami, that is what it feels like now… If things really go to crap for Miami during the season for Miami, you could make another push at the trade deadline. But right now, I don’t see Jordyn Brooks in the conversation.”
