The Texas A&M Aggies are rising in popularity for blue chip recruits. Recruiting prospects watching the success of quarterback Marcel Reed and head coach Mike Elko pique the interest of blue chippers. Plus the renewed NFL pipeline at A&M, now featuring wide receiver KC Concepcion as a first rounder, draws interest.
The Aggies sit atop of the recruiting rankings for both On3/Rivals and 247Sports for the 2027 cycle. However, they’re now in the process of delivering a new historic recruiting milestone.
And this is not for the Class of 2027 either. But rather a 2028 prospect who could very well deliver new recruiting history in College Station later in August 2026.
Historic Mark That Texas A&M Could Hit
The Aggies landed in the final three for five-star quarterback Donald Tabron II out of Detroit on Saturday. Tabron holds that star ranking via 247Sports composite.
But here’s the historic mark the Aggies could hit if Tabron chooses TAMU on Aug. 15 in front of family and friends.
“If Texas A&M can close on Tabron, he would become the highest-rated quarterback to commit to the Aggies since Conner Weigman in the 2022 recruiting class, which ultimately finished as the top-ranked haul in the country,” wrote On3 Texas A&M reporter Jaxson Callaway on Saturday.
Weigman owned a 0.9899 composite score by 247Sports out of Bridgeland High in Cypress, Texas. He too was a five-star quarterback talent who ultimately chose an Aggies team led by former head coach Jimbo Fisher. But both Weigman and Fisher are no longer roaming around College Station.
Meanwhile, Tabron owns a 0.9867 score ahead of his junior season at Detroit Cass Technical. Hence why he could alter recruiting history if he chooses the Aggies and maybe even bump his rating ahead of his senior year.
Determining if Texas A&M Lands in a Great Spot for 5-Star QB
Texas A&M isn’t alone in the race to land the 6-foot-4, 200-pound state champion quarterback from Michigan.
The Aggies have SEC rival LSU to fend off. The Tigers own their trend of producing NFL-caliber quarterbacks including two top five picks in Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels. Plus just recently produced Garrett Nussmeier despite a disappointing 2025 season that saw coach Brian Kelly get fired midseason. Now renown quarterback guru Lane Kiffin leads LSU, plus the recruiting charge to land Tabron.
But the third is Big Ten heavyweight Oregon, presenting its own deep lineage of QB play. The Ducks are envisioning a potential Dante Moore replacement down the road. Tabron looks like a taller version but with a still growing strong right arm. Yet recruiting intel points to Texas A&M rising as the leader to win over Tabron.
“Texas A&M has controlled the buzz surrounding his recruitment over the last few months, and those close to the program held a strong level of optimism coming out of the spring after hosting Tabron for a visit and having him on campus as a camper,” Callaway wrote, who adds there’s “strong optimism” that Elko and his offensive coaching staff can win over Tabron in the end, and make new recruiting history.
