New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees delivered his Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement speech on Saturday, August 8, and one portion in particular quickly became the defining moment for Saints fans.
Brees turned directly to the city where he spent the final 15 seasons of his career and described the responsibility he felt after arriving in New Orleans in 2006.
“You trusted me with the soul of the city,” Brees said, according to a clip shared by ESPN. “And I would have died to protect that calling.”
The moment quickly spread across the NFL’s social channels, with ESPN highlighting Brees’ message to New Orleans and NFL Network sharing video of the former Saints quarterback becoming emotional while reflecting on what the city meant to him.
The reaction was fitting for an induction that became about far more than Brees’ passing numbers.

The Saints marked Brees’ enshrinement with a series of tributes Saturday.
“Forever a Saint. Forever our quarterback. Forever a Hall of Famer,” the team wrote in one social media post.
Another Saints post declared Brees “forever immortalized” after the unveiling of his bronze bust.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame similarly called Brees “a champion” and “a leader in New Orleans” while celebrating the newest Hall of Famer.
NFL Network focused on the emotional connection at the center of Brees’ speech, writing that New Orleans “has a special place” in his heart.
That relationship became one of the central themes of Brees’ Hall of Fame weekend even before he reached the podium. Brees said beforehand that there was a “99.9% chance” he would cry during the speech and acknowledged that writing it had forced him to repeatedly revisit some of the most meaningful moments of his career.
His message to New Orleans explained why.
Brees arrived in 2006 after a serious shoulder injury clouded his NFL future. At the same time, the Saints and New Orleans were attempting to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
What followed changed the trajectory of both Brees’ career and the franchise.
Brees & Saints Built Their Legacies Together
Sean Payton, who became Saints head coach in 2006, chose Brees as the quarterback around whom New Orleans would rebuild.
The partnership lasted 15 seasons and eventually produced the only Super Bowl championship in Saints history, with Brees earning MVP honors in Super Bowl XLIV. Payton was selected to present his former quarterback for Saturday’s enshrinement.
Brees later said of the Saints’ early years that the team carried “the heart and the soul of the city with us,” language that foreshadowed the message he delivered in Canton.
By the time he retired, Brees had thrown for 80,358 yards and 571 touchdowns during his 20-year NFL career. He became the first Saints player ever elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on the first ballot.
His route there was hardly conventional.
Brees starred at Purdue before the San Diego Chargers selected him with the No. 32 pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. Questions about his size followed him from college into the NFL, and the shoulder injury he sustained with the Chargers threatened his career before he signed with New Orleans.
Those hurdles were a recurring theme throughout Hall of Fame weekend. But the most memorable part of Saturday’s speech was less about what Brees overcame than what he believed he owed the city that embraced him.

Brees entered Canton alongside Larry Fitzgerald, Luke Kuechly, Roger Craig and Adam Vinatieri as part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026.
For Saints fans, though, his induction represented something unprecedented.
Other players with major connections to New Orleans have reached Canton, but Brees became the first player identified so completely with the Saints to sail into the Hall on the first ballot.
That helps explain why so much of the immediate reaction centered not on his statistics, records or even the gold jacket.
It centered on New Orleans.
Brees spent much of his career being viewed as the quarterback who helped transform the Saints. His Hall of Fame speech made clear that he viewed the relationship in the other direction, too: New Orleans had transformed him.
And when his biggest football honor finally arrived, Brees used the moment to tell the city exactly what that responsibility had meant.
