Boston Red Sox Make MLB History After Thrilling Win Over White Sox

The Boston Red Sox seemed down and out on several occasions Thursday night against the Chicago White Sox.

However, Boston rallied from multiple deficits before Caleb Durbin delivered a walk-off hit in the 13th inning to lift the Red Sox to a thrilling 12-11 victory and complete the sweep.

The Red Sox have now won eight straight games, remain undefeated in August, captured nine consecutive series and improved to 26-3 over their last 29 games.

Red Sox Make MLB History

As if the winning streak wasn’t impressive enough, the Red Sox also made MLB history.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Boston’s sweep of the White Sox marked its sixth sweep of a team that entered a series in first place this season. That made the Boston the first team in the expansion era (since 1961) to sweep six first-place teams in a single season.

Boston has simply refused to quit night after night, something interim manager Chad Tracy acknowledged after the victory.

“They just did not want to lose,” Tracy said postgame, via USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale. “It was incredible.”

Red Sox Right Now

At the end of June, Boston looked like a team destined to sell at the trade deadline. The Red Sox were well over 10 games below .500 and owned one of the worst records in baseball.

Since their historic July and dominant start to August, however, Boston has surged to 63-51. They now own the third-best record in the American League and trail the New York Yankees by just a half-game for second place in both the AL and the AL East.

Boston will open a home series against the Athletics on Friday night. Oakland enters the matchup at 45-70 and on an eight-game losing streak.
