The New York Yankees celebrated Old Timers Day at Yankee Stadium on August 8. This year, it brought a different meaning to both David and Ryan Weathers. Both father and son have now pitched for the Yankees.
David Weathers was a reliever on the 1996 championship squad, allowing just one run in 11 innings in the postseason. His son, Ryan, is in their starting rotation 30 years later.
In a bit of symmetry, both father and son were acquired from the Miami Marlins in separate trades nearly 30 years apart. David was a midseason trade in 1996 while Ryan was picked up in the offseason after the 2025 season.
Ryan and David Weathers on Shared Experiences with the Yankees
Ryan and David Weathers spoke with YES Network’s Meredith Marakovits before the game against the Atlanta Braves.
“It’s super cool,” said Ryan Weathers. “I hope to follow in his footsteps and hopefully win a World Series here. He’s got that one up on me in the pinstripes, but it’s really cool for sure.”
“If people knew where we’re from, how rare this is, to be here is unbelievable,” said David Weathers. “I’m proud of him for how he’s pitching, just to persevere, come up with the Yankees. I’m like him, I hope in 2026 that he can bring home another championship. But it’s exciting.”
With David Weathers experiencing the thrill of winning it all, he’s shared those stories with his son.
“He’s told me a lot,” said Ryan. “He got to pitch at Old Yankee Stadium. Some of the stories he had about just the crowd. When he got the big punchout against the Braves, how the crowd reacted, how the stadium erupted. It’s just cool he gets to share that with me and hopefully we can do that.
In 1996, David had a 9.35 ERA in 11 appearances. However, that gets forgotten after he delivered 11 innings of one-run ball for the entire postseason to help that team win it all.
“What’s unbelievable is I had an okay regular season, but had a really good postseason,” said David. “That’s what Yankee fans want. They love the regular season, but it’s all about the postseason here.”
In a perfect way to share that moment, the Yankees are currently playing the Braves this weekend.
“Where we’re from, it’s almost all Braves fans. It was sweeter in ’96 to take them down.”
The Weathers are from Loretto, Tennessee. Both father and son pitched for Loretto High School.
Ryan Weathers won’t get an opportunity against the Braves this weekend. Cam Schlittler is scheduled for the series finale against Atlanta. Weathers will pitch in their upcoming series against the Seattle Mariners.
Another Father-Son Duo at Yankees Old Timers Day
The Weathers aren’t the only father-son combo of current New York Yankees. Cody Bellinger is in his second season in New York. His father, Clay, spent the 1999-2001 seasons with the club. Clay Bellinger appeared in the 2000 and 2001 World Series.
After Cody Bellinger was traded to the Yankees ahead of the 2025 season, the father-son duo got to take in Old Timers Day last season. The Bellingers got to celebrate the event for the second straight year.
With Cody on a five-year contract, there will be plenty of opportunities for the two to take this day in.
