Roger Craig spent decades waiting for football’s highest individual honor. His wife, Vernessia Craig, has been there for almost the entire journey.
The former San Francisco 49ers running back is being enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 8, adding Canton to a résumé that already includes three Super Bowl championships and one of the most influential seasons ever produced by an NFL running back. The occasion also puts a spotlight on the family Craig built with Vernessia during a marriage that has lasted 43 years.
And this isn’t simply a spouse standing beside a famous athlete late in his career. Roger and Vernessia’s connection stretches back to Craig’s childhood in Davenport, Iowa.
Roger Craig & Wife Vernessia Have Been Together for 43 Years
San Francisco Chronicle reporter Eric Branch wrote ahead of Craig’s induction that Vernessia grew up only a few football fields from Craig and his best friend, Jamie Williams, in Davenport. Branch described Vernessia as Craig’s wife of 43 years.
The couple has five children.
In a 2009 profile, the University of Nebraska listed their family as daughters Damesha, Rometra and Niajia, along with sons Rogdrick and Alexander.
Athletic ability clearly didn’t stop with their father.
Damesha described herself in a 2025 interview as a former track and field standout who earned a full scholarship to UCLA. Rometra became a standout basketball player and multi-sport athlete before playing at Duke. Duke’s official biography identifies her as the daughter of Roger and Vernessia Craig and notes accomplishments that included All-America basketball recognition and national championships in taekwondo.
Alexander also competed in college track. Academy of Art University’s athletics department lists him as a former sprinter and two-sport high school athlete whose parents are Roger and Vernessia Craig.
Craig Made a Family Decision Before His Hall of Fame Induction
One of the more revealing details surrounding Craig’s long-awaited trip to Canton involved who would introduce him.
Williams has known Craig since childhood. They grew up together in Davenport, became roommates and teammates at Nebraska and eventually reunited with the 49ers.
Still, Williams told the Chronicle that he assumed Craig would ask Vernessia or one of his five grown children to serve as his Hall of Fame presenter.
Craig chose Williams instead.
The decision underscores just how far Craig’s football story reaches back. Williams was alongside him before Nebraska, the NFL or the Super Bowl rings existed, and eventually blocked for Craig when the pair reunited in San Francisco.
For Vernessia and the Craig children, Canton represents the end of a different wait. Craig had been eligible for Hall of Fame consideration for decades before finally being selected as part of the Class of 2026.
Roger Craig Won 3 Super Bowls With the 49ers
Craig’s Hall of Fame case went far beyond longevity.
He won three Super Bowls with San Francisco — XIX, XXIII and XXIV — during one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history.
His first championship also produced an NFL first. Craig scored three touchdowns in the 49ers’ Super Bowl XIX victory over the Miami Dolphins, becoming the first player to score three times in a Super Bowl. He later added championships against the Cincinnati Bengals and Denver Broncos.
But Craig’s defining statistical achievement came in 1985.
He rushed for 1,050 yards and added 1,016 receiving yards, becoming the first player in league history to surpass 1,000 yards both rushing and receiving in one season. Only Marshall Faulk and Christian McCaffrey have subsequently matched the feat.
Three years later, Craig rushed for 1,502 yards, caught 76 passes for another 534 and earned Associated Press NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors.
That versatility made Craig a prototype for backs who would come decades later.
Now the 49ers star finally gets the honor that eluded him long after his playing days ended — with Vernessia and a family that has been part of the journey from Davenport to San Francisco to Canton.
