What is the Red Sox’s Response After Losing Bregman?

The Boston Red Sox losing star infielder Alex Bregman was a tough blow to the team. Replacing a player with 209 career home runs is never easy.

When you add in the trade of long-time third baseman Rafael Devers, it’s not the best look for the organization.

But do the Red Sox have a plan going forward after losing their star to the Chicago Cubs?

On Sunday, MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo dropped an interview with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, and he spoke about the perception of losing both Devers and Bregman.

While all eyes are currently on the top free agents, Bo Bichette, Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker, the Red Sox may allocate resources to multiple mid-level players, such as Eugenio Suarez, rather than one splash signing.

“Rather than spend a ton of time on the particulars of these cases, what is most important is 1) how we respond to improve our roster in the near term and 2) how I can learn from the experiences and allow that to inform how I approach the role going forward,” Breslow said to Cotillo. “Neither outcome we face right now is ideal, but both will be evaluated over a longer time horizon.”

Bregman’s Tenure With the Boston Red Sox

Bregman signed with Boston in 2025 after a nine-year tenure with the Houston Astros.

During the 2025 season, Bregman batted .273 with an .821 OPS, hitting 18 home runs and 62 runs driven in. While he did make the All-Star Game, his performance took a bit of a dive from his early days in Houston.

From 2018-19, Bregman hit 72 home runs with 215 runs driven in, having an OPS+ above 150 in both years.

It was reported that the Red Sox offered Bregman a five-year deal worth $165 million with heavy deferrals.

However, it wasn’t enough for Bregman, as he signed a five-year, $175 million deal with the Cubs.

So what’s the plan for a post-Bregman Red Sox team?

What’s the Response by Breslow?

“We will continue to find the best ways to exhaust our resources,” Breslow said to Cotillo. “Obviously, we made commitments to Roman (Anthony) and (Aroldis Chapman), we’ve traded for established players like Sonny (Gray) and Willson (Contreras), and we have the flexibility to continue to push.”

The interesting part of what Breslow said is the “flexibility to continue to push.” Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reported that the club is getting “creative” in replacing Bregman and acknowledged that this could even mean another pitcher.

If the Red Sox had already added flexibility post-Devers, why couldn’t they make up the minimal gap in talks with Bregman?

That remains to be seen. However, Patrick McAvoy of Sports Illustrated theorized that the Red Sox might not have been allowed to match the Cubs and that it has been a poor series of events for Boston.

“At the end of the day, the loss of Bregman overshadows the good the team has done this offseason, McAvoy said. “With Devers being traded, the club arguably should’ve had the “flexibility” to get a deal with Bregman over the finish line. It did not accomplish that goal, which makes the Devers deal even worse.”

While it’s been a disappointing offseason for Boston, this isn’t the last we’ll be hearing from Breslow.
