Packers Decide Chase Claypool’s Fate After Rookie Minicamp Tryout: Report

Wide receiver Chase Claypool’s time with the Green Bay Packers was short.

Claypool was one of nine players to try out at the team’s rookie minicamp from May 1-2. SI on Packers’ Bill Huber reported Sunday the Packers didn’t sign Claypool or any other tryout players.

“None of them were signed, a source said,” wrote Huber.

“Claypool was the big name. The other eight were undrafted and unsigned free agents. Claypool was a fifth-year pro trying to rekindle what had been a promising career.”

A 2020 second-round pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Claypool is trying to resume his football career. He last played in a regular season game for the Miami Dolphins during 2023.

Claypool posted a pair of 800-yard seasons in receiving to begin his career. As a rookie in 2020, he scored 11 total touchdowns, including four in one game against the Philadelphia Eagles. With that performance, Claypool set a Steelers rookie record and was the first NFL rookie to score four touchdowns in a game since 1979.

But from 2024-25, the wideout averaged 9.8 yards per catch with just 54 receptions in 27 games. He also scored only two touchdowns.

Claypool spent 2024 training camp with the Buffalo Bills. He wasn’t on an NFL roster in 2025.

Packers Don’t Sign WR Chase Claypool After Rookie Minicamp: Report

Claypool faced long odds to an earn a roster spot with the Packers. While Green Bay parted ways with Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks this offseason, the Packers still have strong receiver depth.

Green Bay possess nine receivers on its offseason roster. Christian Watson, Matthew Golden, Jayden Reed, and Savion Williams will likely be at the top of the team’s receiver depth chart when it’s first released this summer.

To supplement that group, the Packers signed Skyy Moore in NFL free agency this offseason.

Will Sheppard, Jakobie Keeney-James, Isaiah Neyor and J. Michael Sturdivant are the other receivers on Green Bay’s offseason roster.

Based on what Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said to reporters Friday, it doesn’t sound like Claypool and the other tryout players received much of a chance to let loose on the field during the minicamp. Huber reported “quarterbacks didn’t even throw” passes to Claypool and the other receivers.

But with his appearance at Green Bay’s rookie minicamp, Claypool is back on the NFL radar. Perhaps he gets another opportunity with a different team this spring.

LaFleur told the media Friday that Claypool is “big” and appeared to be “in great shape” at the minicamp.

Packers Also Don’t Sign RB Isaiah Jacobs

The other significant name trying out at Packers rookie minicamp was running back Isaiah Jacobs. He’s notable for the franchise more because of his last name.

Isaiah is the younger brother of Green Bay starting running back Josh Jacobs. LaFleur spoke about the similarities between the brothers.

“You almost have to do a double-take, if you just quickly glance, that it wasn’t Josh out there,” LaFleur told the media. “Yeah, they look very, very similar.”

The Packers are potentially in the market for a backup running back for Josh Jacobs this summer. The team lost Emanuel Wilson in NFL free agency during March.

But the Packers didn’t sign Isaiah over the weekend.

It’s always possible Green Bay could reconsider any of the tryout players the team didn’t sign this weekend. Huber reported, though, Isaiah’s next opportunity will come with the Dolphins.
