The Detroit Tigers have been searching for an arm to round out their rotation. As pitchers and catchers report, they have brought back a familiar face.
The Tigers have signed franchise legend Justin Verlander to a one-year, $13 million deal with $11 million deferred, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The deferred payments will start in 2030.
The deferred money is an interesting caveat that effectively makes the contract a one-year, $2 million deal.
Verlander will now return to the team that he spent the first 13 years of his career with. This could very well be his last ride with the team before his final stop at Cooperstown.
What Does Verlander Bring to the Detroit Tigers at This Stage?
Detroit drafted Verlander second overall in the 2004 MLB Draft from Old Dominion University. The rest is history.
An American League Rookie of the Year award, three Cy Young awards, an MVP and nine All-Star selections later, Verlander is one of the greatest pitchers of this generation. He has nothing left to prove before his inevitable gold jacket.
He was traded to the Houston Astros from Detroit 10 seasons ago, and he would go on to win two championships with the team.
After signing a huge deal with the New York Mets, they would trade him back to Houston. He would then sign a deal with the San Francisco Giants, where he spent 2025.
During the 2025 season, the results were mixed. He went 4-11 in 29 starts with a 3.85 ERA and 137 strikeouts.
However, this doesn’t tell the full story. In the first half of the season, he went 0-7 with a 4.70 ERA. In the second half, he went 4-4 with a 2.99 ERA.
His fastball isn’t what it used to be, averaging just under 94 mph. However, his slider is still effective, with a .216 expected batting average and a .359 expected slugging, according to Baseball Savant.
He does not have the control he once did, with an average walk rate. However, he still limits hard-hit balls at a 37% rate.
Entering his age-43 season, Verlander may not have as much left in the tank, but he won’t have to be his former self for Detroit to win games.
How Does Verlander Fit in Detroit?
Verlander will receive a warm welcome coming back to the team he spent 13 years with. However, they won’t need him to be an ace or anything close to that.
The Tigers already have one of the best, if not the best, 1-2 punches in baseball with two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal and two-time All-Star Framber Valdez.
Behind them, Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize and Reese Olson already made up a strong rotation. Now, they have Verlander as a back-of-the-rotation starter, who can still eat up innings.
Being in such a strong rotation, the expectations are lessened for Verlander. But that doesn’t mean that the team isn’t excited to have him back. Skubal shared a post on Twitter of excitement for Verlander’s return.
For a team that finished second in the AL Central in 2025, Verlander will be one of the many key acquisitions this offseason to help them reclaim the division.
