Sean Payton Shares Injury Update on Courtland Sutton After Three Missed Practices

The Denver Broncos got some unfortunate news on Thursday when offseason trade acquisition and sixth year wideout Jaylen Waddle was seen limping at practice.

It appeared that the damage was not too severe, with head coach Sean Payton clarifying that the former Dolphin has a strain and should return over the course of the next “4-5 days“.

However, on the other hand there was some good news coming out of Broncos camp with regards to the wide receiver room, as Payton also announced that wide receiver Courtland Sutton; who was nominated to his second Pro Bowl of his career this past season; was not injured and participated in the walkthrough on Thursday.

The questions surrounding Sutton arose over the past few days after the 30 year old missed three straight practices on Tuesday and Wednesday before only doing the walkthrough on Thursday.

Courtland Sutton Held Out of Practice to Keep Body Fresh

The former SMU product answered these questions in speaking to the media later in the day.

“I had a lot of talks with the team – strength staff, trainers, coaches, whatnot – about what this plan was going into this part of the season. Last year, kind of got ran into the ground going into the end part of the season. And with us ultimately getting to where we want to get to, playing in February – it’s a long season ahead of us.” Sutton said to the media.

“Just trying to make sure the body stays as fresh as possible, as long as possible. I know everybody gets all anxious and excited about ball is back. And we got opportunity to go see us run around and everything. Different narratives get thrown out, this and that. But like I said I try to be a good soldier.

Whether it’s something I want to do or not I just try to be a good soldiers so that at the end of the day I’m doing what’s best for the team and put myself into position to have a fresh body going into the long part of the season.”

And when subsequently ask to confirm whether he was in fact healthy and injury-free, Sutton replied, “Indubitably”.

One of the more interesting questions that arises from the former first round pick’s answers is perhaps a small underlying disappointment, or even disagreement with the decision to hold him out of practice in this early part of camp.

Sutton repeated the notion of being a “good soldier” three times in just his first answer, and claimed that this decision was being taken “whether I like it or not”.

Not that this points to any major rift or argument between him and Payton or the training staff, but it is a noteworthy point – and certainly an encouraging one for Broncos fans, who undoubtedly would prefer their star wideouts to be raring to go rather than be thankful for an extra few days rest on the sidelines before the season has even begun.
