In mid-December of this past season, the Minnesota Wild made one of the biggest acquisitions in club history, trading for former Norris Trophy winning defenseman Quinn Hughes, the captain of the Vancouver Canucks.
While Hughes had been linked to a pair of clubs in the Eastern Conference, his trade to the Wild caught many off guard. He made an immediate impact on Minnesota’s blue line, and eventually set a new franchise single-season record for points by a defenseman, surpassing the previous benchmark of 51 points shared by Ryan Suter and Brock Faber.
His 52 points in just 47 games during the 2025–26 campaign established the new standard while reaching the milestone in significantly fewer games.
However, the major question on the minds of Wild fans everywhere is when he’ll sign an extension. He was eligible to sign a new contract on July 1, but so far, he has yet to do so.
NHL Insider Gives Minnesota Wild Fans Worrying Update About Quinn Hughes’ Future
According to NHL Insider Keith Kavanaugh, the situation has shifted from “when” the Wild get Hughes signed to an extension to “if”.
“Bill Guerin was on with Russo today, where he was basically talking about, you know, these are big decisions, and we’ve been in touch with their camp,” he said. “The sentiment I’d say a month ago was not if he’s going to sign this extension, but when he’s going to sign this extension with Minnesota, and now it almost feels like it’s shifted a little bit to if.”
Fellow Insider Jeff Marek chimed in with the following:
“I think in the back of Quinn Hughes’s mind is, I don’t think any of this is about the money, because I think the money he’s going to get in Minnesota is the money he’s going to get in New Jersey, is the money he’s going to get in Detroit, is the money he’s going to get wherever he ends up going,” he said. “I think he looks at it and says, like, ‘Is this a Stanley Cup team?’”
Meanwhile, the latest update from Wild GM Bill Guerin didn’t exactly inspire confidence in Minnesota fans.
“I’m not gonna get too far into it, but I have been talking to his camp all along,” he said. “These things take time… they are big decisions for players and teams, so it’s a process to work through it.”
Until Hughes signs a new deal, it’s going to be a worry at the forefront of the minds of Wild fans everywhere.
Wild Veteran Nick Foligno Doesn’t Appear Worried About Quinn Hughes Re-Signing
According to recent comments from Wild veteran Nick Foligno, who was acquired at the NHL Trade Deadline and later re-signed to a one-year deal, there shouldn’t be much worry regarding Hughes’ future with the club.
“Maybe it’s stupid to say, but on a team like this, we’re just super confident in who we are,” Foligno said. “It seems like a no-brainer to join. I don’t think there’s an insecurity, like, ‘Oh, we need Quinn.’ It’s like, ‘Man, why would you leave here? We’re a great team.’ That’s where the confidence comes from.”
