The Las Vegas Raiders continue to tinker with the roster. They recently signed tight end Zack Kuntz, but decided to let him go after just a few days on the team.
Luckily for Kuntz, he wasn’t without a team for long. According to the NFL’s transaction wire, he was claimed by the Dallas Cowboys.
The 6-foot-7 tight end didn’t play a game last season and was most recently with the Miami Dolphins before landing with the Raiders. He was originally a seventh-round pick of the New York Jets in 2023. Despite sticking with the team for two seasons, he has only played in two games.
He has also never had a catch at the NFL level. The Cowboys could look at him as a potential blocking tight end due to his size. Kuntz may also just be a training camp body. The Raiders’ tight end room is their biggest strength, so he’ll have a better chance at making the roster in Dallas.
Brock Bowers Can’t Be Stopped
The Raiders’ offense is still going to be a work in progress this season. They had the worst offense in the NFL last season, so that’s difficult to fix overnight. New head coach Klint Kubiak is one of the best playcallers in the NFL, so that’s a start.
What will really help the Raiders is that they have one of the best playmakers in football. Tight end Brock Bowers had a record-setting rookie season, and while Year 2 didn’t go as well, he’s still arguably the top tight end in the league.
He’s been dominating in practice, and ESPN’s Ryan McFadden gave some more details.
“Tight end Brock Bowers keeps stacking up good practices,” McFadden wrote. “On Thursday, Bowers was problematic for the defense and made one of the best plays since the start of camp. During 11-on-11, Bowers caught a deep touchdown pass from quarterback Kirk Cousins, in which he slipped behind the defense and was left completely wide open near the sideline. Bowers stopped running his route and waited until Cousins launched the ball across the field.
“There were multiple occasions where Bowers beat out linebacker Quay Walker to make catches in the middle of the field.”
Ashton Jeanty Has Strong Practice
As important as Bowers is to the Raiders’ offense, running back Ashton Jeanty may be even more. He’s one of the most highly drafted running backs of the last decade, but he didn’t have the rookie season many people expected.
The Raiders now have a new head coach who wants to run the ball and added center Tyler Linderbaum, who is an elite run blocker. Now that the pads are on, Jeanty has been impressing in practice.
Assistant head coach Mike McCoy expects the Raiders to lean heavily on Jeanty this season.
“He’s really taking advantage of what the coaching staff’s asking him to do,” McCoy told reporters. “He understands and he knows the success you can have as a running back in this system – not only as a runner, but in the passing game. … The number of touches he’s going to get, you saw it today.”
