The Boston Red Sox, on the heels of an eight-game winning streak, which has come as part of a string of 25 wins in 28 games now, have probably had their share of good fortune, at least as far as this summer goes. But considering how much bad luck came into play int he early part of the year, it only seems fair that more turns in Boston’s favor these days. And what could be better at this point than a return to health of star outfielder Roman Anthony?
It does appear to be getting closer, which is almost earth-shattering news at this point for the Red Sox, who have clearly gotten accustomed to playing without the guy who was, a year ago, the top prospect in all of baseball. Since then, he put together a very good two months with the Red Sox, before struggling with focus and injuries since early September 2025.
Red Sox Have Not Had Roman Anthony Swinging Pitches Until Now
Anthony finally injured ligaments in his wrist and ring finger on a checked swing in early May, and has not played since–the Red Sox, in fact, sent him to their facility in Fort Myers to help him focus on getting back to the plate. He was struggling at the time, batting just .229 with a .675 OPS when he was hurt.
Progress has been slow. Originally, the Red Sox were hopeful that it would be a short-term injury, part of a pattern that has been common for the team this year. But Anthony has still struggled to swing a bat–until now, at least.

Roman Anthony Signs Are ‘Positive’
That’s the latest update from Red Sox manager Chad Tracy, via Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.
As one popular Red Sox Twitter account noted, “Roman Anthony has begun hitting off a pitching machine. Chad Tracy said ‘all signs are positive right now.’” Not only has Anthony begun hitting off a pitching machine, he has done so for multiple days now. The Red Sox have remained hopeful of getting their one-time MVP candidate back on the field, and it could happen in the coming weeks.
Can the Red Sox Find a Spot?
Of course, with the way the Red Sox have played lately, it is also hard to imagine upending the apple cart by inserting Anthony back into a lineup that has found its stride, even with role players manning key spots.
Anthony would likely be re-inserted into the left field spot that was supposed to be his for the foreseeable future, but he would be replacing Jarren Duran who, despite a prolonged slump, is back in the good graces of Red Sox fans.
Duran has hit .306 with a .782 OPS in his last 13 games. Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu have been two of the hottest hitters in the Red Sox lineup, so it could be that Anthony would be eased back into the lineup, if and when he is ready.
