The Seattle Seahawks added undrafted fullback Brock Lampe on August 6, making them perhaps the only NFL franchise to have not one but three fullbacks on their 90-man training camp roster.
In doing so, the Seahawks simultaneously waived undrafted tight end Lance Mason from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
However, things are not to dispair for the young playmaker, Mason has found a new home the very next day after being picked up off the waiver wire by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“The Steelers have claimed TE Lance Mason (from SEA) and WR Colton Dowell (from SF) off waivers. To make room, theyâve released TE JJ Galbreath and WR AT Perry.” PennLive’s Nick Farabaugh posted on X.
Mason started in 9 games in his senior year at Wisconsin in 2025, having transferred over from Missouri State that past offseason, and featured in 3 more. He recorded 30 receptions over the course of the season, managing 398 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns.
At Missouri State the year prior, Mason dominated even more. In 12 games and 8 starts the Garland, Texas native delivered 590 receiving yards on only 34 receptions â a whopping 17.35 yards per reception â along with 6 touchdowns.
Mason’s participation on Seattle’s roster was always somewhat of a tenuous one: the Seahawks have one of the deepest tight end groups in the league with A.J. Barner and second round draft pick Elijah Arroyo starring as the top receiving options, and veterans Eric Saubert and Nick Vannett as the lead blocking tight ends.
Surpassing any of those four was always going to be an uphill battle for an undrafted prospect, and at the moment the quartet’s only competition is 2025 UDFA Nick Kallerup, who made the Seahawks’ initial 53-man roster at the start of last season.
What are the Expectations for Seattle’s Tight Ends in 2026?
The main focus will be on second year pro Elijah Arroyo. The 6’5, 254 lbs tight end came into the league as one of the premier receiving TEs, but in last year’s championship-winning season was not given vast amount of opportunities to show exactly what he can produce.
The second round pick still managed 15 receptions for 179 yards and a touchdown, but Arroyo will no doubt have far higher expectations of himself heading into year two.
The biggest obstacle to him getting game time is the perhaps surprise ascendance of Barner, who coming into the league as a fourth round pick in 2024 was not seen as a bona fide starter, even after a broadly encouraging debut season that saw him rack up 30 receptions for 245 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Barring a shock trade or dramatic change of circumstances, Barner will be with the team through the 2027 season. In the meantime, Arroyo will need to show that he is, at the very least, worthy of playing as part of two tight end set â a formation that is becoming ever more popular in NFL offensive circles.
