The Denver Nuggets have been playing without Aaron Gordon since January 23, when he re-aggravated a right hamstring injury. Gordon has been limited to just 23 games this season due to a right hamstring strain.
Speaking to the media after Tuesday’s practice, coach David Adelman shared an update on Gordon’s recovery. It has been nearly five weeks since he reinjured his right hamstring against the Milwaukee Bucks. He was initially given a recovery timeline of four to six weeks.
“He did basically everything but the contact stuff,” Adelman said, via Sports Illustrated. “He got up and down the script. We did some situational defensive drills. He was a part of that, but it’s just going to be a day-by-day thing. I think the more he gets out there, just gets up and down and plays with contact, even if it’s against our coaches, that would bring more confidence for everybody to feel comfortable with him coming back.”
Adelman added that Gordon has been patient throughout his recovery process. There is some frustration on his part, but he remains focused on completing his rehabilitation and getting back to the court to help his teammates.
Gordon’s Status for Friday’s Game
The Nuggets are set to visit the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Paycom Center on Friday night. Both teams have been ravaged by injuries this season, but they remain in the upper half of the Western Conference standings.
According to Denver’s official injury report, Gordon has been ruled out against the Thunder. The Nuggets haven’t issued an exact date for his return, but ESPN has estimated it to be on March 1 versus the Minnesota Timberwolves at home.
Nuggets’ Injury Report
In addition to Gordon, the Nuggets have seven more players on their injury report. Peyton Watson, Tamar Bates and Curtis Jones are all listed as out. Watson is recovering from a strained right hamstring, Bates had left foot surgery and Jones is on a two-way contract.
Jamal Murray, Jalen Pickett and Spencer Jones are tagged questionable, while Julian Strawther is probable. Murray played just eight minutes on Wednesday’s win over the Boston Celtics because of an illness, and he’s still dealing with it as of Friday morning.
Strawther is more likely to get upgraded to available despite dealing with a sprained right big toe.
Doctor Explains Gordon’s Injury
After Gordon re-aggravated his hamstring injury, Dr. Joe Ramos appeared on Denver Sports 104.3’s Injury Insights with Zach Bye to explain the Nuggets star’s dilemma. Ramos is a medical doctor and personal injury attorney based in Colorado.
“The hamstring is just an incredibly tough injury to overcome,” Ramos said. I’ll be honest, I don’t want to be like the naysayer here. I think that he’s got issues, and he’s got lifelong issues. There’s a lot of stuff that follows these injuries that plague people, and he’s proven that he’s one of those.”
Ramos added that the Nuggets shouldn’t expect Gordon to be himself even in the playoffs. He suggested looking into PRP treatment and “eccentric” exercises, though it’s unclear what the team’s medical team guided him in his latest rehabilitation.
