North Carolina Could Explore Stunning Move for John Calipari

The North Carolina Tar Heels suffered another disappointing exit in the NCAA Tournament this year. Shortly after blowing a big lead against VCU, the program decided to part ways with head coach Hubert Davis.

Davis has been the head coach of the Tar Heels since the 2021-22 season. He compiled a 125-54 record in his six seasons at North Carolina. Now, he’s on his way out of town and he Tar Heels are searching for his replacement.

Quite a few names have been brought up as potential coaching targets. Unfortunately, there are many who would likely not consider leaving their current positions.

North Carolina is one of the best coaching jobs in college basketball. If the Tar Heels want to get aggressive, they could craft an intriguing offer for any coach. A new name has been suggested for the program to consider pursuing.

Could North Carolina Consider Targeting Arkansas’ John Calipari?

John Calipari has been the head coach at Arkansas for two years. He has gone 50-22 in those two seasons and has led the Razorbacks to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.

Chris Walker, an analyst for CBS Sports, has strongly urged the Tar Heels to consider pursuing Calipari if they want to get back to being an elite team in the college basketball landscape.

“Carolina, if you want to win, go hire John Calipari!” he said simply.

The idea of pursuing Calipari is an interesting one. However, there is a very real chance that he would simply stay at Arkansas.

Back in April of 2024, Calipari agreed to terms on a five-year contract to be the head coach of the Razorbacks. He has been focused on leading the program to contention. Leaving after just two years would be a difficult decision to make.

John Calipari Would Instantly Put the Tar Heels on the Map

Throughout his Hall of Fame career, Calipari has coached four teams.

In his first stop at UMass, he compiled a 189-70 record. That put him ont he map for Memphis, where he coached from 2000-01 to 2008-09 and went 214-68 and a second-place finish in 2007-08. Unfortunately, the NCAA has vacated much of that season due to violations of rules.

Following his time at Memphis, Calipari took the Kentucky head coaching position where he was from 2009-10 through 2023-24. He led the Wildcats to an impressive 410-123 record and a National Championship during the 2011-12 season.

He left Kentucky to become the current head coach at Arkansas.

Whether or not he would consider North Carolina remains to be seen. However, it would be well worth it for the Tar Heels to place a phone call and gauge his interest.
