New York Yankees Announce Jasson Dominguez News After Luis Gil Decision

The New York Yankees made a pair of roster moves after their loss to the Houston Astros on Sunday. Despite the loss, the Yankees still won the series, and it was their first loss after winning eight straight.

Per multiple reports, after the Yankees optioned Luis Gil on Sunday, they promoted Jasson Dominguez from Triple-A. It will be Jasson Dominguez’s season debut, and considering the Yankees demoted a pitcher and brought up a reliever, it will be interesting to see how manager Aaron Boone utilizes Dominguez.

Once a top prospect in the Yankees organization, Jasson Dominguez has been a controversial piece for the Yankees.

In 468 MLB at-bats, he’s hitting .248 with 16 home runs, 58 RBI, and an OPS of .724.

Although some Yankees fans may claim he’s a bust, Dominguez has yet to reach the 1,000 MLB AB’s plateau, which is usually a good indicator of how good or bad a young hitter is in the big leagues.

MLBTradeRumors.com’s Mark Polishuk was quick on the report and gave some insight to Dominguez’s journey throughout his professional baseball career:

“Dominguez burst into the majors with four homers and a .258/.303/.677 slash line over 33 plate appearances when he debuted near the end of the 2023 season.  It seemed like “the Martian” was on his way to living up the hype associated with his status as one of baseball’s top prospects, but he underwent a Tommy John surgery just eight games into his big league tenure.  The TJ rehab and an oblique strain limited him to 58 minor league games and 18 MLB games in 2024, and Dominguez then hit .257/.331/.388 with 10 home runs over 429 PA for New York in 2025.”

The promotion for Jasson Dominguez likely means Giancarlo Stanton will head to the Injured List, but the Yankees have other options in the outfield that block Dominguez’s chances.

Jasson Dominguez wasn’t drafted by the New York Yankees because he’s from the Dominican Republic, and he swiftly made it through the Yankees pipeline.

He debuted in MLB at age 20, and is still just 24-years-old.

He’s been a player with a lot of trade rumors tied to him, but part of the reason New York may be hesitant to deal him is the fear that another team will utilize him more frequently, and that will cause him to break out, and the Yankees will be kicking themselves down the road for dealing him.

However, if he gets an extended run this season in the wake of the Stanton injury, New York may have a clearer decision on how they want to manage Dominguez and his future.
