Mike Macdonald Shares Injury Update on Sam Darnold & Other Seahawks After NFC Title Win

The Seattle Seahawks battled to a hard-fought 31-27 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday night, which allowed them to book their spot in Super Bowl LX. Head coach Mike Macdonald and the Seahawks will now prepare for a rematch of Super Bowl XLIX against the New England Patriots, where they have quickly emerged as the favorites to come out on top.

Seattle went toe-to-toe with Los Angeles in this one, as quarterback Sam Darnold managed to outduel Matthew Stafford with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line. However, Darnold and several other players were battling through injuries in this one, which will surely loom large as the Super Bowl draws near. On Monday morning, Macdonald provided injury updates on several of Seattle’s banged-up players.

Throughout the Seahawks’ playoff run, injuries have been a pretty important topic of discussion. Right before the team’s divisional round matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, Darnold suffered an oblique injury that threw his status for the game up in the air. While he ended up playing, Darnold is still dealing with this in the wake of Seattle’s huge win in the NFC Championship Game.

The good news for the Seahawks is that they will get an extra week of rest and recovery ahead of the Super Bowl. While they aren’t exactly dealing with any major injuries ahead of this contest, guys like Darnold are dealing with various bumps and bruises that could have an impact on the outcome of this game.

Several other injuries popped up in the team’s win over the Rams. Starting left tackle Charles Cross has been dealing with a lingering foot injury, while fullback Brady Russell and linebacker Drake Thomas were forced out of the game early with new ailments. When speaking about the team’s injury situation, though, Macdonald didn’t sound particularly concerned about the status of any of his players.

“(Brady Russell’s) got something with his hand, so we’ve got to work through that,” Macdonald said on “Brock & Salk.” “Charles is gonna be sore, Sam is gonna be sore. Drake (Thomas) has got a shoulder (injury). There’s a couple of other things we’re gonna work through, but nothing major, to our knowledge.”

Considering the circumstances, it would take something truly major for any of these players to miss the Super Bowl. And with ample time to get healthy for this game, the hope is that Seattle will have its full complement of players ready to go for this one. If that ends up being true, the team will likely remain a big favorite to take down New England.

Nothing is guaranteed in the NFL, though, and the Patriots have proven throughout the playoffs that they can win a game in several different ways. Macdonald has had an answer for every team he has faced this season, though, and there’s reason to believe that will continue in the Super Bowl. Kickoff for this championship matchup is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 8.
