Miami Dolphins Get Bad News Before 2026 NFL Draft

Heading into the NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins face question marks at most positions. One of those is the cornerback position, as they currently employ mostly unproven players. Last year’s primary cornerbacks for the Dolphins were Jack Jones Jr. and Rasul Douglas. Jones recently signed with the San Francisco 49ers, and Douglas remains a free agent.

While Douglas, who was very good last season, expressed interest in returning to the Dolphins, Miami seems to be undergoing a youth movement, which would likely rule out a reunion. As a result, many expect the Dolphins to address their secondary with one of their first selections in the NFL Draft. However, the team recently received some bad news that may put a dent in that idea.

Potential Miami Dolphins Target Receives Bad Medical News

One of the top cornerback prospects in this year’s class is Texas cornerback Jermod McCoy. McCoy missed the 2025 season with a torn ACL, but was widely considered the No. 1 cornerback heading into the season after a very impressive 2024 campaign. His stock has been in flux throughout the draft process, as questions were raised following his absence from the NFL Scouting Combine. Those concerns appeared to be put to rest after his impressive pro day, which featured a 4.38-second 40-yard dash.

However, a new report by Tony Pauline revealed that several NFL teams had red-flagged McCoy due to his medicals. Pauline wrote:

“I’m told that red flags were raised after teams deemed McCoy’s knee to be a degenerative condition. Medical opinions differ team by team; some could fail McCoy based on his medicals, which means they would take him off their board completely, while others could flag him, meaning he would be assessed a penalty of a half-round to a full round on his grade. Some other teams may look at his medicals and be okay with McCoy’s knee.”

Pauline did not say whether the Dolphins were one of those teams to be concerned about McCoy, but after this news, it seems improbable that the Dolphins would use their first selection on a player with medical concerns. Last season, cornerback Will Johnson underwent a similar situation, as he was widely projected to be a first-round pick but medical issues caused him to fall to the second round.

Dolphins Linked to McCoy

Prior to the news, Miami had been linked to McCoy in several mock drafts. A recent one by CBS Sports analyst Pete Prisco predicted the Dolphins would draft McCoy with the No. 11 selection. Prisco wrote:

“He is coming off a torn ACL, but he is back running and should be ready for the season. They have a messy corner room, so they need a guy who can step in and give them a true No. 1 corner.”

In Prisco’s mock draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane, who alongside McCoy has been considered one of the top cornerbacks in the draft. Considering McCoy’s most recent medical update, it seems likely the Dolphins would not select a cornerback with their first pick if Delane is off the board.
