The Detroit Lions were once a franchise many joked about, and now they have one of the most expensive core groups of players in the NFL. With the Lions extending Jahmyr Gibbs, the sum of extensions that the team has handed out has now surpassed $1B overall.
Goff leads the way with $212M wrapped up in his deal. Then, it is Aidan Hutchinson at $180M. Penei Sewell signed for $112M total; Amon-Ra St. Brown was not far behind with $120.01M.
Next is Alim McNeil, whose deal was worth $91M. Kerby Joseph signed his deal for $85M, and Jack Campbell just signed for $81M. Jameson Williams is on the books for $80M, and now it is Gibbs at $67.5M.
If that total is not high enough, the team is also about to engage in talks with Sam LaPorta and Brian Branch. Not many rosters have that many core pieces extended on their team. All of them have been added since 2021, and Goff is the only one who was not a draft pick.
It is hard not to look at the success of all of these players and give a strong appreciation for what General Manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell have done.

Even with Goff, the team traded Matthew Stafford to acquire him. Stafford has done fine for himself, but it took a bold move to acquire the quarterback that currently has them as a contender entering the season.
The rest of the roster is all draft and develop. In 2021, Sewell was taken in round 1, McNeil in round 3, and St. Brown in round 4.
The team also extended Derrick Barnes from that draft, and Levi Onwuzurike is entering a contract year.
From the 2022 draft class, the Lions extended Hutchinson, Williams, and Joseph. Malcolm Rodriguez is also a part of the group but is not signed.
In 2023, it was Gibbs, Campbell, and eventually the team will extend LaPorta and Branch. In three drafts, they found ten players who are going to be paid near the top of their positions. That is quite the run.
Lions Draft Success Has Taken a Turn in Recent Years
It is hard to beat such a strong three-year run. Unfortunately, the last three years have a few more questions. To be fair, his third draft since then is still entering their rookie years, so that is all unknown.
The 2025 draft class has potential, but neither Tyleik Williams nor Tate Ratledge showed that they would be close to the top of their position in salary in a few years. The rest of the class did not show much.
Then, the 2024 class is the biggest miss from Holmes so far. Terrion Arnold was released and Ennis Rakestraw has been unable to stay healthy. Giovanni Manu might miss the majority of his third year, and Sione Vaki has not shown much in two seasons, either.
Christian Mahogany is the only one with a chance to start right now. He is the only one with a real extension chance, too.
