It has been a long wait, but the Detroit Lions superstar Jahmyr Gibbs is back where he belongs— the gridiron. After an NFL record-setting deal is finally done, the running back is set to return to the practice session at Allen Park in full flow. The head coach Dan Campbell is visibly relieved to have one of the engines of his offense back in action.
During the training camp practice this morning, the 50-year-old sat down for an interview with the NFL Network‘s senior reporter, Stacey Dales, who asked him about his feelings to have him back in the squad, and coach Campbell couldn’t hide his excitement.
“I am excited about that, to be able to get him out there,” said Campbell on the NFL Network. “I have said all along. Brad (Holmes) and I love this kid. He is one of us; he fits what we do perfectly. So who does he not fit? This guy is something else, so it is good to have him back.”
It has been over a week since the Lions’ training camp started, but Gibbs refused to take part in the physical drills until a new extension was signed. Becoming the highest-paid running back in the NFL with a $22.50 million-a-year deal, he is now set to resume his practice.

Jahmyr Gibbs’ new contract is valid for three years, paying him $67.5 million in total. It includes guaranteed money of $51.5 million. The contract runs until 2023, and the maximum value could reach up to $75.75 million. Amid the massive price tag, the head coach was also asked what made Gibbs worth the major investment.

“He does everything. He is tough, he will protect, he is smart, he is versatile, he has got vision as a runner,” Dan Campbell added during the same interview. “He has got patience; he obviously has long speed, so he breaks out in the open and can take the distance. And man, this kid got a route tree now too.”
The 24-year-old was already in the training camp yesterday amid his contract rumors, especially after Indianapolis Colts‘ Jonathan Taylor extended his contract. However, he did not have a full practice session, even though he was spotted wearing pads. He did walk through with teammates as well as stretching. However, today is expected to be different.

The Detroit Lions squad has received a much-needed boost with the extension of Jahmyr Gibbs. As Dan Campbell is delighted to have him back in action, the running back was seen at Allen Park today with a big smile, carrying his pads. The official X handle of the Detroit Lions posted a video of him arriving at the training camp this morning.
Dan Campbell stated during the OTAs previously that Gibbs would be used as a bell cow in the 2026 season, especially after David Montgomery was traded to the Houston Texans. Given how efficient the three-time Pro Bowler is as a dual-threat weapon, he is expected to thrive in his new role.
