Jets Insider Explains Bizarre Breece Hall Situation: ‘Upset Some Teammates’

Breece Hall did not win the team MVP award for the New York Jets this season.

Instead, a player who didn’t start the season with the team and even got cut halfway through it won. Isaiah Williams became the third primarily special-teams player to win the team MVP award in franchise history.

“I think Hall should have got it. Why didn’t he? That is very interesting. Even Aaron Glenn admitted that there was some internal surprise that Williams got it. Here is my theory on it. I think Hall may have upset some teammates toward the end of the year in the next-to-last game. He checked out of the game with a knee injury. I think that might have upset some teammates that he tapped out of that game,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini explained on the “Flight Deck” podcast.

“Of course, he didn’t play in the Buffalo game. He practiced that week; he certainly practiced enough to be able to play in the game, but did not play in the finale. I think, and I’m connecting dots here that may have had some impact on the voting,” Cimini said.

The team MVP award is voted on by the players on the team each season.

“Certainly, if you looked at it, he rushed for over 1,000 yards. [He] was the first guy to do that since 2015 on a team just devoid of individual standouts. Hall should have gotten it, [but] he didn’t, and I think there is more behind the scenes than we know,” Cimini added.

That Story Certainly Tracks…

In Week 17, Hall finally eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards for the first time in his career.

During that contest against the New England Patriots, he kept getting it, then losing it. Hall entered that game just under 50 rushing yards away from achieving it. He would rush for five yards and be over. Then he would have a negative four-yard rush, then be under.

However, he finally put it to bed when he broke off a 59-yard gallop to the house. That ensured he would be the first 1,000-yard tailback in a green and white uniform since Chris Ivory in 2015.

Interestingly, seemingly immediately after he locked it in, Hall mysteriously got hurt on the sideline and checked out of the game. If we do some more dot connecting, it felt like Hall accomplished what he wanted to and then dipped out.

After that long touchdown, the Jets made it a 42-10 ball game in the fourth quarter. The result was over and all we needed was the fat lady to sign to make it official. Hall didn’t wait for that.

Jets Still Want Hall Back

Despite all of this supposed drama, the Jets still want to retain Hall this offseason. The former Iowa State product’s rookie contract expires, and he is set to be a free agent in 2026.

“He is poised for top-10 running back money after posting his first 1,000-yard season. While the Jets could work to extend his contract, his market will be strong, and too many teams need an impact back. He would be the best running back in free agency if he’s available,” ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler wrote.

For context, the top 10 running back money Fowler suggested would put Hall somewhere between $9.87 million and $20.6 million per year, according to Over The Cap.

Cimini specifically referenced on a previous podcast episode that he believes Hall will get between $10 million and $12 million per year on his next deal. Whether that is from the Jets or one of the other 31 NFL teams in free agency this offseason.
