Even though they fired him earlier this month, the Washington Commanders may still end up seeing a lot of Kliff Kingsbury in the near future.
The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly considering the embattled former Commanders OC for their now-vacant offensive-coordinator role, according to insider Josina Anderson.
Kingsbury was let go by Washington on Jan. 6 after just two years on the job. He and quarterback Jayden Daniels teamed up for a magical 2024 season where the Commanders ranked fifth in the NFL in points per game and ran to the NFC Championship Game before losing to the Eagles.
But that was followed, of course, by the disastrous 2025 season where Washington scored just 20.9 points per game and went 5-12, finishing just one game ahead of the last-place New York Giants in the NFC East.
The Eagles Are Considering Kliff Kingsbury For Their Offensive Coordinator Role
The Eagles suddenly have an opening for their offensive coordinator role after embattled 2025 OC Kevin Patullo was demoted by head coach Nick Sirianni on Tuesday. They are are reportedly considering Kingsbury for it after he was let go by Washington.
The Eagles got a good look at Kingsbury’s offense without Daniels in Washington’s 24-17 win in Philadelphia in Week 18 that cost them the No. 2 seed in the NFC. The Commanders amassed 25 first downs and 274 total yards on 63 plays, led by third-string quarterback Josh Johnson.
Philadelphia, of course, lost to the sixth-seeded San Francisco 49ers 23-19 on Sunday and was eliminated from repeating as Super Bowl champions, leading to Patullo’s reassignment.
Aside from his tenure in Washington, Kingsbury spent four seasons as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, guiding them to the playoffs in 2021.
But the Eagles likely hope Kingsbury and quarterback Jalen Hurts can repeat the magic he had with Daniels in 2024, where the Washington quarterback won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
The Commanders scored 28.5 points per game and ranked seventh in the NFL in yards per game, going 12-5 and ending a three-year playoff drought while also shocking the top-seeded Detroit Lions 45-31 in the divisional playoffs.
Commanders Fans May Root For Kliff Kingsbury To Get Hired By The Eagles
The Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2024 on the ground, since many Commanders will remember Saquon Barkley’s 118-yard, three-touchdown rushing performance in the 55-23 win in the NFC Championship Game at Lincoln Financial Field.
But Kingsbury was fired by the Commanders due to philosophical difference involving the run game, particularly after Daniels went down. Kingsbury, as he did in college at Texas Tech and during Daniels’ first season, wants to run a fast-paced, pass-first offense.
The Commanders led all playoff teams in passing attempts in the playoffs last year (116) by a wide margin, despite the fact they only played three games.
So if Kingsbury goes to Philadelphia and unveils his pass-first philosophy, he may have an impact on Hurts, but he also may stunt some of what made the Eagles successful. Their struggles running the ball in 2025 was a major part of their undoing, since after 179.3 rushing-yards per game in 2024, the Eagles were 18th in the league in rushing-yards per game in 2025 (116.8).
The Commanders wouldn’t mind seeing that trend continue into next season, especially with a healthy Daniels back and a fresh perspective guiding the team’s offense.
