The Washington Commanders are starting to pick up momentum as they head into their 3-game preseason schedule — building roster depth and filling holes where they identify weaknesses.
“The Commanders are expected to sign veteran offensive lineman Max Scharping,” CBS Sports NFL reporter Matt Zenitz wrote on his official X account. “Has made 33 career starts.”
“The Commanders are signing G Max Scharping, source confirms,” ESPN’s John Keim wrote on X. “Scharping was a second-round pick by Houston in 2019. He was here in 2024 on the practice squad.”
Scharping, 6-foot-6 and 327 pounds, was a 2nd-round pick (No. 59 overall) in the 2019 NFL Draft after he was a 3-time All-MAC selection at Northern Illinois.
He played 3 seasons for the Texans, followed by 2 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He spent time on practice squads for the Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles and played for the Pittsburgh Steelers the last 2 seasons.
“(Scharping) started an AFC Championnship Game for the Bengals on the road in Arrowhead,” Commanders fan Teth-Adam wrote on X on Friday. “He was lined up next to Hakeem Adeniji. Jackson Carman and Cordell Volson were two of the other starters. Just a nightmare collection of football players playing in front of Burrow with a trip to the SB on the line.”
Commanders Offense: Stock Continues to Rise
The Commanders made a move that could save their season in the past week by signing NFL All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs to a 1-year contract reportedly worth up to $12 million.
“BREAKING: The Commanders are signing 4x Pro Bowl WR Stefon Diggs, multiple sources tell me,” NFL insider Jordan Schultz wrote on his official X account on Wednesday afternoon. “Diggs, a DMV native, comes off the seventh 1,000-yard receiving season of his career and should play a prominent role (this) season for QB Jayden Daniels in Washington … there has been a lot of talk about Brandon Aiyuk and the Commanders. But Stefon Diggs has been Washington’s primary target to pair alongside Terry McLaurin. I’m told Diggs and Daniels have been in communication, and the deal is now across the finish line.”
The Commanders have long sought another elite wide receiver to pair with NFL All-Pro Terry McLaurin, and finally got their man.
