The Chicago White Sox began a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians at Rate Field in Chicago on Friday night.
The Guardians won the series opener 8-2.
During the game, Chicago Sports Network’s Brooke Fletcher reported that Chicago and a four-year MLB player agreed to terms on a minor-league deal.

Fletcher wrote on X: “White Sox have agreed to terms on minor league deal with OF Joey Wiemer. He will be assigned to [Triple-A] Charlotte”
The Washington Nationals released Wiemer on Wednesday. The right-handed-hitting outfielder hit .286/.398/.514 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 83 plate appearances across 32 games with Washington this year.
Wiemer, 27, tied Carlos Delgado for the most consecutive plate appearances reaching base to start a season since 1920 with the Nationals this year.

Notably, he hit lefties at a .351/.442/.757 clip with the Nationals this season. He recorded innings at center and right field for Washington in 2026.
While Wiemer put up strong numbers for the Nationals this year, he struggled for the Triple-A affiliate, hitting just .196/.227/.257 with one home run and 16 RBI over 42 games.

The Milwaukee Brewers selected Wiemer in the fourth round (No. 121 overall) of the 2020 MLB Draft out of Cincinnati.
Wiemer made his MLB debut with Milwaukee in 2023. He slashed .204/.283/.362 with 13 home runs and 42 RBI over 132 games in his rookie season.
Since 2023, Wiemer has never played in more than 32 MLB games in a season, spending much of the time in the minors.
The Brewers traded Wiemer, right-hander Jakob Junis and cash to the Cincinnati Reds for right-hander Frankie Montas on July 30, 2024.
Wiemer appeared in just two games for the Reds. Cincinnati traded the outfielder and second baseman Jonathan India to the Kansas City Royals for right-hander Brady Singer in the 2024-25 offseason.
On July 31, 2025, the Royals designated Wiemer for assignment. Four days later, the Miami Marlins claimed him off waivers.
The Marlins traded Wiemer to the San Francisco Giants for cash last November. Less than a month later, the Giants designated Wiemer for assignment. A few weeks later, the Nationals claimed him off waivers.
In 212 MLB games, Wiemer has hit .216/.296/.380 with 19 home runs, 26 doubles, 66 RBI and 13 stolen bases. Wiemer has generally been a strong defender throughout his career, with +11 Defensive Runs Saved and +7 Outs Above Average in 1,417 1/3 innings in the outfield.
