The Colorado Department of Transportation has closed Interstate 70 and U.S. 24 in eastern Colorado because of high winds.
I-70 was closed in both directions between Limon and Burlington, and U.S. 24 was closed in both directions between Burlington and Seibert, according to a CDOT travel alert.
Eastbound I-70 also was closed between Airpark Road at mile marker 292 and Deer Trail at mile marker 328.
CDOT officials ordered the closures amid high winds gusting at speeds up to 60 miles per hour across much of Colorado, which has led to power outages and dust storms. High winds were exacerbating dry conditions and raising fire risks, especially in the Fort Collins Area and northeastern Colorado, agency officials said.
“Proper disposal of cigarette butts and securing trailer chains to prevent sparks is mandatory,” officials said in the travel alert. “Roadways may be closed or restricted due to extreme winds. Semi-tractor trailers, RVs, campers, high-wall trailers, and light vehicles should be vigilant as blow-over risk may be high.”
