Cardinals HC Mike LaFleur Shares What Most Impresses Him with QB Carson Beck

The rookies had a chance to show what they can do as the Arizona Cardinals hosted Rookie Minicamp. That included incoming quarterback Carson Beck, who hopes to find a way to compete for time in 2026.

Right off the bat, Beck has impressed Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur. In particular, for his demeanor.

“His demeanor, I guess you could say,” LaFleur said. “But that hasn’t really stood out. I’m not shocked. He loves it. He loves just sitting there. He’s a 24-year-old adult, and he loves ball.”

Carson Beck has had plenty of experience in college that helped him to build his demeanor, spending six seasons at that level. That included two years as the starting quarterback at Georgia and one as the starting quarterback at Miami, where he led the Hurricanes to a national championship appearance.

A third-round pick, nothing is going to be handed to Beck. At the same time, the Cardinals have a quarterback battle to navigate this offseason as they look for a franchise quarterback.

“I’m not going to sit here and lie and say, ‘Hey, the first round isn’t different than the seventh round.’ I understand that,” LaFleur said. “But part of our job in this building is to say, ‘Hey, take all that away, and let’s develop at the pace that they can develop. Let’s make sure we have great urgency in the way that we coach them.’ They need to match that urgency back. Because again, the clock starts now for all these guys. No one really cares at that point. You got to put the best 53 on the roster, and the best 22 out there from a starting standpoint.”

Only one player can start at quarterback. A lot of teams, there’s not even an opportunity to compete for the starting job, as teams have entrenched starters. That’s not the case with the Arizona Cardinals, though, and Carson Beck wants to take this opportunity seriously.

“Even if I were to be the guy at some point, you are constantly learning, through game experience, through past experience, meetings, just talking to guys around the facility, you’re trying to get breadcrumbs from each and every person,” Beck said.

“There’s only one guy out there (at quarterback). … Obviously, I would love to play and perform but again, we’ll see where it takes me.”

For the time being, veteran Jacoby Brissett is set to be the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals. At the same time, he’s sitting out for a new contract, and things could be getting awkward.

That’s obviously led to some concern. However, when LaFleur was recently asked about Brissett, he downplayed any potential concerns.

“He’s played a lot of football, and we’re in communication,” LaFleur said. “He knows what the expectation is. Everything’s good from a dialogue standpoint. But like we said, this is voluntary, and so that’s where we’ll leave it.”

The Cardinals have two veterans with starting experience, Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew. After that, Kedon Slovis and Carson Beck round out the roster with significantly less NFL experience.
