Bubba Wallace arrived at Darlington Raceway focused on a full race weekend, but his biggest moment came away from the track. The 23XI Racing driver and his wife, Amanda Wallace, welcomed their second child, a daughter named Cameron Jade, on Thursday.
Two days later, Wallace delivered one of the strongest qualifying laps of the weekend, securing second place for Sunday’s Goodyear 400. What followed during his FOX Sports interview shifted the focus from racing to family, turning a routine post-qualifying moment into a personal announcement.
Bubba Wallace Shares Daughter’s Birth After Qualifying Run
Wallace had just locked into the front row alongside teammate Tyler Reddick when he stepped out for his interview. Instead of leading with performance, he revealed the meaning behind his lap.
“That lap for the 23 was driven by Cameron Jade. Do you know who that is? That’s my baby girl. She was just born on Thursday.”
The announcement caught the broadcast team off guard before they congratulated him. Wallace kept his response brief.
“Thank you, I appreciate it. Big weekend.”
The moment added context to what had already been a strong qualifying session for 23XI Racing. Both Wallace and Reddick placed their cars at the front, giving the team a solid starting position at a track where track position often plays a key role.
Wallace Credits the Team and Tyler Reddick for Gains
Wallace pointed to changes made between practice and qualifying as a key factor in the improvement. He also credited Reddick for pushing the pace late in the session.
“That’s Reddick for you. He pushed it to the limits. That was a hell of a lap. Sitting there on the grid, I knew he was up near the top, and then he went even higher. It was a massive lap.”
Despite the result, Wallace said there is still work to do before the race. Darlington remains one of the most demanding tracks on the schedule, and the current car setup adds to the challenge.
“Darlington is super tough, and this package is a handful. I thought we were really far off in practice, but we ended up pretty close to the 45. So it’s more on me to figure it out and close that gap.”
He explained that the team worked through adjustments based on feedback from the car.
“The engineers go through a ton of data to figure out the aero balance with this new package, and I think we just over-adjusted. It’s always nice when you give feedback, and they say, ‘That makes sense.’ It’s the worst when they don’t believe what you’re saying. But we’re all vibing right now.”
Family Moment Shapes Wallace’s Darlington Weekend
Even with a front-row start, Wallace made it clear that this weekend carries more than just racing importance. The birth of Cameron Jade comes after he missed the arrival of his first child, Becks, during a race weekend in 2024.
Now, Wallace enters Sunday’s race balancing competition with a major moment in his personal life. He acknowledged that there are still adjustments to make with the car ahead of the race.
“We’ve got some things to work on with our Columbia Toyota Camry, but a front-row lockout for us. We’ll go have some fun tomorrow.”
The weekend places Wallace in a dual position. He lines up near the front at one of NASCAR’s toughest tracks while also marking a milestone away from the track with the arrival of his second child.
