The Buffalo Bills‘ postseason hopes came to a crushing end yet again, as they suffered a 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in their divisional round matchup on Sunday night. Despite committing five turnovers, the Bills were in this one right up until the end, but they shot themselves in the foot one too many times, and it ended up costing them their season.
In a game that was impacted heavily by controversial calls, particularly in overtime, Buffalo seemed to get the short end of the stick every time. The most impactful call of the bunch saw the referees award Broncos’ cornerback Ja’Quan McMillan an interception on a pass that he appeared to simply take out of the hands of Bills’ wide receiver Brandin Cooks. After the game, McMillan revealed his viewpoint on his signature play for Denver.
Ja’Quan McMillan Opens Up on Controversial Interception vs. Bills
Throughout the first four quarters of this game, the Bills and Broncos engaged in a tense back-and-forth contest that needed an extra period to decide a winner. Despite turning the ball over four times, Buffalo was able to rally with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter to kick a game-tying field goal that sent the game to overtime.
Denver possessed the ball first in overtime, but Buffalo’s defense held strong and gave its offense a chance to come out on top. With the team facing 3rd & 11 from its own 36-yard line, Josh Allen loaded up and took a shot down the field for Cooks, who had gotten past McMillan. Initially, it seemed like Cooks had caught the ball, but McMillan ended up coming away from their entanglement with the pigskin in his hands.
On the replay, Cooks had the football for a point in time, but the referees determined that he did not survive the ground when attempting to secure it, which allowed McMillan to rip it away from him. After the game, McMillan agreed that Cooks did actually catch the ball, but he refused to give up on the play, and he ended up saving Denver’s season.
“He had a step on me, and I just fought through the hands, finished the play,” McMillan said of the play. “He actually had the ball coming down, and once I had my hand on the ball, I was able to take it from him. I fell on top of him and just held the ball up and showed the fans some love.”

The wind was taken out of the Broncos’ sails pretty soon after this game, as it was revealed that their quarterback, Bo Nix, suffered a fracture in his right ankle that will end his season prematurely. All the Bills will really care about at this point, though, is figuring out a way to overcome their playoff woes in the future.
Buffalo clearly has the answer at quarterback in Allen, but the rest of the roster will need to be fine-tuned once again over the offseason. It’s another devastating result for a team that simply cannot string together a deep playoff run, but if the front office plays its cards right over the coming months, the Bills should reemerge as a top championship contender once again in 2026.
