Bill Belichick is the greatest coach in the history of the New England Patriots and arguably the best the NFL has ever seen. He has eight Super Bowl rings, six of those as a head coach. He is not, however, a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Belichick won’t be enshrined in Canton this summer, his first year of eligibility for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. ESPN reported on Jan. 27 that Belichick missed the cut, with ESPN reporters Don Van Natta and Seth Wickersham wrote, citing multiple sources.
“In voting earlier this month, Belichick fell short of the 40 out of 50 votes needed for induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame during his first year of eligibility, four sources with firsthand knowledge of the outcome told ESPN,” the duo wrote for ESPN.com. “Belichick received a call from a Hall representative last Friday afternoon with the news that he won’t be inducted into the Hall in Canton, Ohio, this summer.”
Why Bill Belichick Isn’t First-Ballot Hall of Famer
Only Don Shula and George Halas have more regular-season wins than Belichick, whose dynastic run in New England following the 2023 season. As it stands, Belichick has a 302-165 regular-season record. No coach has won more playoff games than Belichick, whose six Super Bowl wins as a head coach are also the most in NFL history.
Yet, that’s apparently not enough for a first-ballot trip to Canton.
According to the report, voters unsurprisingly held Belichick’s past cheating allegations against him.
“Multiple sources told ESPN that Spygate and Deflategate, the twin cheating scandals during the Patriots’ championship run, came up in deliberations among voters,” the ESPN reporters wrote.
A longtime rival, former Indianapolis Colts executive Bill Polian, might have been leading the charge.
“(Polian) told some voters he believed Belichick should ‘wait a year’ before induction as penance for Spygate.”
Belichick Snubs Shocks NFL World
While this outcome was always a possibility for the polarizing Belichick, who has rubbed plenty of people the wrong way over his decades in the sport, the prevailing reaction was one of surprise.
“Insane … don’t even understand how this could be possible,” Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes tweeted.
Longtime NFL writer and insider Peter King had a similar reaction.
“Holy f—! … I’m very, very surprised,” he told ESPN.
