Officers responded to a call about animal cruelty at 2 p.m., Pueblo Police Department officials said in a news release Wednesday night.

Officers spoke to a suspect and found he had an arrest warrant for failing to appear in court. When officers attempted to arrest him, the man pulled a gun from his pocket and an officer shot him in response, Pueblo police said in a news release.

Officers provided first aid and the man was taken to the hospital with critical injuries and later pronounced dead. No officers were injured in the shooting.

Pueblo police did not say where the shooting took place and could not be reached for comment late Wednesday.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, and the shooting will be investigated by the 10th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team and led by the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.
