Anthony Edwards Injury Update: Timberwolves Announce Return Timeline After Scary Fall

Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves suffered a hyperextended knee in Game 4 of the team’s first-round playoff series against the Denver Nuggets, and the star isn’t expected to make an injury return for an extended period.

Edwards came down awkwardly on his left knee after defending a shot in the second quarter and did not return to Game 4, which the Timberwolves ended up winning, despite their star and Donte DiVincenzo both going down with injuries.

Now, the day after the game, the Timberwolves have the full extent of Edwards’ injury, and when he could make a return.

Timberwolves Announce Anthony Edwards Injury Update

While there was mass speculation online about the full extent of Edwards’ knee injury, on Sunday morning, an official update was announced.

According to Shams Charania of ESPN, Edwards suffered a left knee bone bruise and hyperextension, and will be sidelined for at least a few weeks, guaranteeing he won’t return in the Timberwolves’ series against the Nuggets.

“Just in: Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards has sustained a bone bruise and hyperextension in his left knee and is expected to miss multiple weeks, sources tell ESPN. Results showed Edwards avoided any ligament damage, but he will now miss time,” he wrote on X.

As Charania said, Edwards did miss out on any serious injury, like a torn ACL, but he is still expected to miss time, which could potentially include the rest of the postseason.

According to doctors, an ACL injury would have been the worst case scenario, while a slight bone bruise would have been the best. Now, after Charania’s update, it appears the full extent of his injury, and now expected return, falls somewhere in the middle, as the star will miss a few weeks.

“Edwards will begin rehab immediately as the Timberwolves finish their first-round series against the Denver Nuggets — up 3-1 — without him. Devastating injuries in Game 4 win: Donte DiVincenzo lost with a torn Achilles and a multiweek absence for Edwards,” Charania added in a follow-up post.

GettyMINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – APRIL 25: Anthony Edwards #5 of the Minnesota Timberwolves reacts to an apparent injury in the second quarter against the Denver Nuggets of Game Four of the First Round of the 2026 NBA Western Conference Playoffs at Target Center on April 25, 2026 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

While all the speculation about Edwards’ knee injury can now be put to bed, as based on his official status, he’ll miss a few weeks.

Still, that begs the question of when can the star return for the Timberwolves?

Per Charania, Edwards is expected to miss a few weeks, and that could mean different things, depending on what Minnesota does in the rest of the postseason.

Despite injuries to Edwards and DiVincenzo, Minnesota won Game 4 and are now up 3-1, a playoff lead they have never given up in franchise history.

So, assuming the Timberwolves can advance, they would start the second round on May 4, with that series potentially lasting up to two weeks long. That would give Edwards three weeks to make a full recovery.

If Minnesota can find a win to beat either the San Antonio Spurs or Portland Trail Blazers in the second round and make the conference finals, that series would start on May 20, and potentially last for another two weeks.

That would give Edwards nearly a month to return from his bone bruise and hyperextended knee. Given that timeline, assuming the Timberwolves, now led by Ayo Dosunmu, Julius Randle, and Rudy Gobert, can keep their hot streak alive, could give the franchise star enough time to make his return.

Still, until a new Edwards injury update is announced, his official status is that he will ‘miss multiple weeks,’ so while currently vague, it remains to be seen when, or if, he can get back on the court this season.
