Several teams were in the mix to acquire Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline earlier this week, but ultimately, the Los Angeles Dodgers landed the two-time Cy Young winner.
The deal sent outfielder Zyhir Hope (MLB’s No. 25 prospect) and right-handed pitchers River Ryan (No. 68), and Brady Smith to Detroit.
While the package was considered strong, what the Tigers reportedly wanted from the Milwaukee Brewers, who were also involved in trade discussions, appeared to be significantly higher.
Tigers’ Trade Demand for Brewers
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, any deal that sent Skubal to Milwaukee would have likely needed to include infielder Jesus Made (MLB’s No. 1 prospect) and even potentially Luis Pena, the Brewers’ second-ranked prospect and No. 18 prospect in baseball.
However, Milwaukee never seriously considered moving Made. The Brewers made it clear he was untouchable in trade talks, and ultimately, negotiations with the Tigers never came close to a deal.
“Rather than making pitching a requirement in any deal, the Tigers prioritized pursuing the greatest overall value,” Rosenthal reported. “If the Brewers offered infielders Jesús Made and Luis Peña, Law’s No. 2 and 22 top prospects, respectively, then sure, the Tigers would have done it. The Brewers would have been foolish to part with both for a rental, even one as good as Skubal. But they were serious in their proposals.”

Who Did Brewers Offer?
The Brewers reportedly explored multiple trade packages with Detroit. Some proposals included Pena and outfielder Alexander Frias, while the teams also discussed Jett Williams during negotiations.
Milwaukee later sent Frias to the St. Louis Cardinals as part of its acquisition of pitchers Dustin May and JoJo Romero.
