The Edmonton Oilers have had a successful run in recent years, and while that hasn’t yet resulted in a Stanley Cup, the team have made two trips to the Stanley Cup Final in the past three seasons.
Obviously, the stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl get all the attention from that success for the Oilers, but they’ve had plenty of role players throughout that stretch that stepped up at different moments. While there’s been major criticisms over the Oilers not getting the right names in place to help those stars get to a Stanley Cup, they’ve gotten contributions from many of them, and now, one has shockingly ended his hockey career.
Noah Philp Announces Retirement from Hockey

One of those players was Noah Philp, a formerly un-drafted Alberta native who came to the Oilers in 2021 to play with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, getting a full season in 2022/23 before finally making the jump to the NHL, with the Oilers having high hopes for him as a potential bottom-six player.
Over the next two seasons, Philp would appear in 30 games for the Oilers, mostly on their fourth line, and in that time, he posted 2 goals and 5 points, failing to take the step necessary to become a full-time NHLer with the organization. Now, after signing with HV71 in Sweden, the team have announced that Philp has backed out of his contract, instead revealing that he’s stepping away from the game of hockey.
“I really want to apologize to HV71 and all involved regarding the timing of my decision, but I have decided to stop playing hockey,” Philp told HV71. “My motivation for hockey is not fully there, and I’d rather be completely honest than not be fully invested in playing.”

Following his time with the Oilers, Philp appeared in two games for the Carolina Hurricanes in 2025/26, but spent the majority of his season in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves, with the writing on the wall for him in North America, as his future was clearly an AHLer and nothing more.
Instead, he chose to follow the path that so many have this off-season, signing in Europe in hopes of turning his career around, but now, the 27-year-old has simply admitted he doesn’t have the motivation anymore, and instead turns his back on HV71 and steps away from the game entirely, even after making it to the highest level on one of the NHL’s best teams in recent years.
Given that he’s still young, there’s time for Philp to change his mind in the coming years and make a return, and while he may not want to do that given his ceiling is likely a fringe NHLer/career AHLer, but if he finds the motivation once again, given what he’s achieved in hockey, there will no doubt be a role for him somewhere in the sport, whether it be as a player or a coach.
