It’s not abnormal for the festival to bake some lesser-known artists into the schedule. It is, however, abnormal for an artist with almost no digital footprint and virtually no findable music to score a Saturday night slot that lasts more than an hour.

Before the theories commence, here’s what we could dig up on Backwoods Barbie:

There is a “Backwoods Barbie” on Spotify, but the artist hasn’t posted a song since January of 2021 and holds 114 monthly listeners, according to Spotify-provided stats. Wrong Backwoods Barbie? Perhaps.

An unverified Instagram account exists, and is even currently posting about the festival and promoting the show. The catch? It only holds 3,848 followers and was created in March of this year, when it was already made public that “Backwoods Barbie” was on the lineup.

This, naturally, has led to fan theories that “Backwoods Barbie” might be a stage name for a much better-known artist. Enter Beyoncé.

I’m convinced Beyonce is performing at stagecoach under backwoods Barbie

Suffice to say, the Beyoncé speculation has been a whirlwind. With her recent debut into country music with her “Cowboy Carter” album, it does check out that the superstar could reasonably make an appearance at a country music festival.

The theory first emerged after Coachella-goers spotted Cowboy Carter-branded trucks at the festival. When Beyoncé never showed, fans speculated that perhaps she was coming out at Stagecoach, held at the same grounds as Coachella.

The theory was briefly quieted when the Backwoods Barbie Instagram account posted a story saying, “For everyone asking – This ain’t Texas, ain’t no hold ‘em, and I aint Beyoncé.”

But with uncertainty around the Instagram account’s legitimacy – and no clarity on who the act is, some in the BeyHive are still holding on to the possibility.

so “logical” hive keeps shutting down our backwoods barbie theories but have yet to find any info on who dj backwoods barbie is. get to work? if yall give me proof of who this person is & why she’d deserve a 2 hour set at a festival i’ll drop out of deluluhive!

And even if she isn’t making a surprise solo set, fans have been quick to point out that the possibility of a guest appearance isn’t out of the question. Several featured artists on “Cowboy Carter” are on this year’s lineup, including two Mane Stage performers: Willie Nelson and Post Malone. Brittney Spencer and Tanner Adell are also set to perform.

And, of course, Backwoods Barbie could be somebody else entirely. The name does, presumably, reflect the 2008 Dolly Parton album, so there’s always that. Or maybe it is an up-and-coming DJ. Right now, it’s looking like we’ll have to wait until Saturday’s 7:45 p.m. performance at Diplo’s Honkytonk to find out.
