Yankees Cash Considerations in Camilo Doval Deal Revealed

The exact amount of cash that the New York Yankees sent the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Camilo Doval trade has been revealed.

The Yankees sent Doval and cash to the Pirates ahead of the MLB trade deadline for minor leaguers Omar Alfonzo and Luis Cruz. Now, we know the exact amount of cash that changed hands in the deal.

Yankees Covering Most of Camilo Doval’s Remaining Salary

The Associated Press has the exact details of the money that changed hands in the Doval trade, revealing that the Yankees sent the Pirates $1,109,358 to cover the majority of Doval’s remaining money on his $6.1 million contract that expires at the end of this season.

“New York is paying Pittsburgh $1,109,358 as part of Saturday’s trade that sent catcher Omar Alfonzo and minor league outfielder Luis Cruz to the Yankees for the former All-Star reliever. Doval had $1,859,358 remaining from his $6.1 million salary, leaving the Pirates in effect responsible for $750,000. The Yankees will make payments of $221,872 each on Aug. 14 and 29, Sept. 11 and 25, and Oct. 9,” Ronald Blum of the AP reported.

While the Yankees surely didn’t want to eat any money when they traded away Doval, given how poorly he pitched for New York this season, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman pretty much had to do it to get any sort of positive return in a trade, which he achieved by picking up two minor leaguers.

Camilo Doval Was a Bust in New York

After previously being an All-Star for the San Francisco Giants in 2023, the Yankees traded for Doval at last year’s MLB trade deadline.

However, he ended up being a major disappointment for the Yankees, as Doval pitched to a 4.63 ERA and a -1.1 bWAR in 66 appearances for New York over the past two seasons.

With the Yankees looking to win the World Series this year, they couldn’t have Doval in their bullpen anymore, so they decided to trade him away to the Pirates. Though they ate money, they were surely happy to at least save a little bit of salary and pick up a pair of young prospects in return for a struggling relief pitcher.
