The New York Yankees are set to face off against the San Francisco Giants on March 25 for their Opening Day of the 2026 MLB season.
After a long offseason, fans are excited to see meaningful baseball on their TV’s. As for the Yankees, they’re ready to get started on pursuing what they hope will be a World Series run.
Heading into the 2026 campaign, there are a lot of questions surrounding the New York franchise. Brian Cashman and the front office were very quiet during the offseason. Do the Yankees have enough talent to be a true World Series contender?
Only time will tell, but manager Aaron Boone and company are making their final decisions for tonight’s game.
With that being said, New York has announced a flurry of roster moves before taking on the Giants.
New York Yankees Make 5 Roster Moves Before Giants Game
On the team’s official X account, the Yankees announced that they have made five roster decision on Wednesday morning.
First, the team has decided to place pitcher Carlos Rodon on the 15-day injured list retroactive to March 22 due to left elbow surgery recovery. They have also placed shortstop Anthony Volpe on the 10-day injured list.
In addition to those two moves, New York has optioned pitcher Luis Gil to Triple-A Scranton/Wlkes-Barre. Randall Grichuk, the veteran outfielder, was signed to a Major League contract and was placed on the active roster.
Finally, the Yankees also placed star pitcher Gerrit Cole on the 15-day disabled list as he makes his way back from Tommy John surgery.
Yankees Fans React to the Flurry of Roster Decisions
At the end of the day, the announcement has raised some concerns about New York’s health. Starting the season without Rodon, Volpe, and Cole is simply not an ideal scenario. However, the news on Cole seems to be a positive sign.
Fans quickly took to the comments section to let their voices be heard.
“Cole only on 15 day not on 60 day?” one fan wrote.
Another chimed in, “15 day for Cole? Oh we’re getting him in May.”
“Another day, another wave of injuries. Rodón, Volpe, now Cole on the IL. Totally normal start to the season. Peak Yankees health management,” a third fan said.
A fourth fan commented, “Volpe should take a year off to allow that shoulder to heal properly.”
Only time will tell what the 2026 MLB season has in store for the Yankees. However, it all begins tonight with a matchup against San Francisco.
